Why do people associate the smoke monster with Jacob’s nemesis?

I have seen a lot of theories that use “smoke monster” and “Jacob’s nemesis”

  1. the reason is events that happen in the the first few sesaons.

in season 3 when eko is killed, moments before Eko sees Yemi, the smoke monster is travelling through the jungle, probably preparing to take Yemi’s form.

then when Yemi walks off, moments later the smoke monster turns up to kill Eko.

  2. lostlove, I do not believe the smoke monster and Jacob’s Nemesis are one in the same.

I don’t see any evidence linking them together, but if that is what some people wish to believe, I can understand why they do.

  3. Evidence linking Smokie & Nemesis:

Ben goes to get ‘judged’ by Smokie(FYI,he’s brought to Smokie by Nemesis, even further supporting a connection) and Alex appears commanding Ben to follow Locke’s every command…so you either have to dismiss any/every apparation/ghost in the history of Lost as having NOTHING to do with Smokie, or you have to admit that Nemesis/the apparitions/Smokie are very closely connected.

Nemesis taks the form of Alex and commands Ben to follow Nemesis(in the form of Locke).
Nemesis takes the form of Yemi and leads Eko to his Smokie-Death.

This doesn’t mean that Nemesis IS Smokie…but it clearly implies a connection between the two.

  4. PS: I will give you one logical reason as to why I do not believe they are the same.

If the smoke monster and Jacob’s Nemesis are the same, he had many opportunities to kill Jacob. In addition to taking Locke’s body or anyone else for that matter at any time to do it.

Yes, actually getting to Jacob wasn’t that easy, but his nemesis has had ample time to find a way. At least a few hundred years!

  5. Go back and watch when Ben was being judged. As he is looking around the room before the smoke pours in, you will see a carving on the wall. It is a picture of Jacobs statue going head to head with the smoke monster. Dont know about everyone else but thats what made me believe it was him.

  6. I don’t think smokie and MIB are one in the same, either. I don’t see how in beleiving that we would have to dismiss the apparitions other people have seen on the island. We don’t know enough about smokie to really judge, ha, what he is although many do believe him to be Anubis? (I think that’s what I’ve read, could be wrong) Fake Locke seemed genuinely suprised when Ben told him his dead daughter said to follow all his directions.

  7. Thanks everyone for your thoughts! Personally I think that smokie isn’t jacob’s nemesis, he seems more like part of the island or something… i don’t know- anything is possible!

  8. dabiatchisher : but it’s not as simple as that. He doesn’t want to get to Jacob to kill him. He wants someone to kill him for him, because of the ‘rules’ and the ‘loophole’.

lostlove : I think that anyway, when people write theory, the smokie/jacob’s nemesis is part of the theory and has to be taken conditionaly, and that’s why they are used interchangeably mostly in theories, it’s because it’s just one theory and it could be wrong.

  9. I’m in the camp of Smokey and the Adversary being seperate entities. I do believe that there have been times when the Adversary used Smokey.

I also believe that there are different sources for all the apparitions and that the same images have been utilized by the different sources to further the different agendas these sources have.
