Libby
Awesome! This site’s up and running again?
Alright well here’s a little whimsical post, on what I think about the enigma that is Libby.
So as of season five, we’re led to believe that Hurley can commune with the dead. He himself seems to be aware of this – playing chess with ‘Mr Eko’, seeing Charlie at Santa Rosa, and even finding Jacob’s, or should I say MIB’s hut, whom we all could describe as a supernatural being to say the least. Problem is, Hurley only became aware of this ability after seeing Charlie. So what does this have to do with anything? Dave, his imaginary friend? What if he’s a ghost? Do we know any dead Daves at all? Ah, Libby’s dead husband.
Coincidence? Infrequent on lost, so i’m willing to bet it isn’t. So this is my speculation.
Dave resides in the mental institution to be around his wife, who unfortunately can’t see him. Or! What if Libby can see him? What if seeing her dead husband’s manifestation drove her to insanity? Rewatch that clip where Libby is at the hospital. She watches Hurley and Dave interact and can be seen to half-smile! What if by seeing Hurley interact with Dave reassures Libby she is not insane? While all this is going on, Dave is feeling rejected after not having a sufficient breakthrough with Libby and befriends Hurley.
The second and last time we see Dave is on the island. Right around the time when Hurley becomes intimate with Libby. Jealous husband? Dave tries to manipulate Hurley’s supposed insanity into making him commit suicide, to prevent him from macking on his chick!
Unfortunately most of my other posts were deleted in the sites reboot, but for anyone that remembers their style, I prefer to use my theory only for a basis of discussion. Anything I have said above is subject to change when someone adds a relevant comment. Every comment counts.
In this way, lets use my theory as a starting point to get to the bottom of this mystery. What are your thoughts? We have all heard countless times that Cynthia Watros will not be returning, and that Libby’s story will not be addressed. If Lost isn’t going to present us with the answer, we’ll have to find it ourselves! What are your thoughts on the matter?

the writers claim the libby story is over. but now the question looms: can the writers be trusted?
cyan_eyed, I certainly could not forget your brilliant flair for writing theories! Glad to see you back! Keep the hits coming!
ekolocation, the writers did not say Libby’s story is over, only that Libby is unavailable to return for S6. They plan to give viewers a finish to her story, without the actor’s direct involvement. It is not their preference to tell Libby’s story this way. The actor has been shooting several movies back to back.
I have to say, I got about half way through this and was saying, “here we go again”, then you took a wonderful turn in the direction of Libby cause of being instintutionalized.
Great approach!
I always thought it would in some way deal with the numbers, much like Hurley…and reading your theory got me thinking…
What if not only did she see Dave, but was in some way effected by the numbers, and wasnt watching Hurley…she was watching Leonard as well…
She saw Hurley had the same problem, and was intrigued and convinced Dave died due to bad luck much like Hurley had believed and blamed of his problems source.
Lol, I actually have a completely different theory on this exact subject, but I truly love your theory…and it got me thinking…
Nicely done Cy!
Very good idea, however i saw the authors talk about Libby in an interview and they as ekolocation said, they’re not interested in continuing the Libby story.
Maybe Dave’s a Flock-type zombie …
Hi cyan_eyed. I had to go back and check on this in Lostpedia, as I recalled it from an earlier discussion.
I found the following:
Carlton Cuse: The connection between the imaginary Dave and Dave his father was completely intentional, I mean we wanted basically Hurley to imagine a friend and have that be wrapped up in his unresolved relationship with his Dad, so that’s why his imaginary friend is named Dave.
Damon Lindelof: As to Libby’s ex, that’s an entirely different David we may or may not meet in the future.
I think it is still possible that while Hurley was seated with his imaginary friend Dave, that Libby could have been seeing her husband David.
I’m hoping that enough is covered via the ‘eyes’ of another character that we will receive some further information.
I read something while the site was down that makes me pretty positive Libby’s story is not over. 🙂
Hi everyone-
My computer was also down. I’m finally back….
Sinster
I believe all of Hurley’s “I see dead people” is a manipulation from the mystery man in black. Everyone he has seen has died on the island. Before you say it……I think Dave died on the island and we will see that this season. Think about it. It is by far MIB best trick. He did it subtle with other Losties, however Hurley needed a bigger push and indeed is not insane. Perception has lead him to that state.
Perhaps Libby is a psycho stalker of Hurley thus following him to Australia and back.(She did have love in her eye’s whilst watching Hurley in the nut house mind you drool was also dripping out of her mouth) And she was killed as a pawn of some sort. Aggg help me out here I cant remember ?? Did Libby’s death direct Hurley in a certain direction? Was there a purpose behind it ?? Doh!! its getiing late and you are forcing me to pop in the DVD…….BRB….LOL
libbys death did convince hurley to go with michael into his “trap” with the others… and everyone who went on that mission )including jin and sun and sayid) are the only ones still alive…maybe because they were far away from the swan implosion… only desmond survives because he is “special”.
im not thinking clearly. monday morning at work. someone save me.
Sinister can you possibly link me to this source?
A.E.S I didn’t even consider relating the numbers to Libby. You may be on to something there.
Dabs thanks for the citation there, I didn’t even know his father was called Dave, so the issue here is somewhat clarified.
Lost freak that is true, but it makes me wonder why would MIB have left the island to visit Santa Rosa back when Hurley’s potential was unrealised (as Jacob touched Hurley AFTER he left the island), and if this is the case, do you think that MIB could have made any other off island appearances?
I have a fear that we are underestimating Libby’s actual persona. We have been presented with next to nothing about her. She could be in fact pathologically evil. I really hope they address the story in some way…
Hey cyan_eyed but I googled lost 2010 spoilers… (I know I’m just damn impaitent, and I can’t spell.)
But here’s a thought what if Libby was on the plane b/c she was HEADING 2 the island, as the losties did on Flight 316. What if she visited the lamp post, and knew where the island was going 2 appear? I feel she may be part of dharma, or another group, as well.
Hey all… I have to first tell ya all that the posts on this site have been cranked up a notch since its return to the net – the layoff did some good! Excellent thoughts, theories & comments… everyone!
With that said, I’ve always thought something similar to what ‘Sinster’ had mentioned in regards to Libby. The fact that she bumps into Desmond, befriends him for a brief moment, offers up the one thing he needs for his quest, and then he suspiciously is guided towards the Island, etc… is just to coincidental!
Maybe she works for Widmore as well (as Abbadon), and gets/guides people to where they need to be. Or maybe they all work for a higher source – MIB or Jacob?
Also, if I’m not mistaken, wasn’t the image of her that we saw prior to Michael setting off the “fake bomb” on the ship trying to ward him off from doing so? I can’t recall what was said… Not sure what that has to do with things but I’m just sticking with ‘cyan_eyed’s’ theme (or maybe the lost theme) and presenting some new questions.
