Do Others Kill Innocents People or Just Guilty?

When Michael’s boat bomb doesn’t explode Ben explains they don’t kill innocent people. Outside of perhaps Jacob … who was innocent the Other’s killed? Also, Smokie is often mentioned as a judge – what role could the Others serve in the sentencing? And, if they don’t corrupt/destroy

  1. Ben is a liar. To me, of all the characters, he is the most interesting. He has made mistakes. But is much of what he does for the greater good, or only for his own good. I think the answer to that question is the answer to your question.

  2. in the first couple of episodes, down on the beach when everyone is keeping watch at night, the others come in a kill somebody who’d done nothing wrong.

Charlie was left for dead by ethan and Mikhail killed bonnie and the other girl in the looking glass who didn’t seem to have done anything wrong.

i suppose to answer your question accurately, we need to know what you mean by guilty or innocent and how one interprets these ideas.

  3. I think it depends on who is leading them at the time. Before Ben, the Others have a tendancy to shoot first and not even bother with questions. After Ben becomes their leader they seem to be a little tamer.

  4. Innocents? Umm… how about all of the Dharma people murdered by Ben and his gang with poison gas? Surely not every single one of them were “guilty”. Neither were random people drug off of the beach shortly after the crash, etc. etc. So they spared Micheal’s life but kidnapped his son and later used Micheal to try to kill other people. Yeah, that sounds like some bonafied Saints to me. Maybe physical and psychological torture is more redeemable than murder? No, I think Ben is just a liar.

  5. Achalli, I think you’re on to something there. I’m wrestling w/the ‘they come … ‘, theory, pondering if ‘don’t kill innocents’ is the rule and not don’t kill daughter, which camp is which (Dharma/Others) and who ARE ‘the good guys’, and as Ban says it could be the definition of ‘guilty’ and who’s doing the defining … in ‘the eye’ of the beholder.

Ben didn’t kill baby Alex (innocent). Maybe the broken rule wasn’t you didn’t kill innocents.

Michael was set up to kill – but who DID he kill. Ana Lucia, who killed others and lots of boat people (but not all … innocents?)

    Problems …

When the extra 815ers flashed back, they were attacked. Frogert hardly seemed dangerous. (But, who knows … even Libby – giving Desmond the boat and watching Hurley in nuthatch … ) That idea could go to the ‘random people’ on the beach, since we now know few are really random.

And, the purge. While it’s possible innocents got off, I’d put Radzinski in ‘guilty’ catigory in a heartbeat.

And those could both be Widmore’s. If so, he followed MIB’s pattern and is not one of ‘the good guys’, only progress.

    Thoughts anyone?

  6. What a lot of people tend to forget is that every single person, both real and fictional, has their own point of view and set of guide lines. and the view a person has is usually molded during childhood.

The Others are ruthless and unforgiven no matter what time period we’ve seen but the degree of this ruthlessness is different. but what ever it is that they are trying to accomplish (what little we’ve been shown) doesn’t appear to be evil. They see thenselves as defending their home and by the time that the Losties crash, they’ve had enough experience with outsiders to suggest that the outsiders are there to exploit the Island.

Now as for DHARMA, they are guilty of being arrogant in thinking that they know better than the Hostiles/Others. But again they view their dealings with the Hostiles/Others as simply defending themselves and their experience suggest that any Hostile they meet will try to kill them.

As it has already been stated, it all comes down to your point of view.

  7. What harm did Charlie ever do? And they tried to kill him more than once, didn’t they? So my judgement will be swift and unforgiving: Down with The Others! 😉

  8. They didn’t *kill* Charlie and it’s likely they (safely) hung him as allowed by ‘the rules’. I defer to Achalli and MIB – they come, they corrupt, they destroy. Why trust ’em.

As for Mikhail, who knows about that guy. He’s got that Anna-Lucia-trigger-happiness and can’t be killed. Heck, he deserves an entire post (as does how why he’s needed to contact w/entire world when they can get off island. Maybe now there’s Sayid if he’s needed.) Wonder if we’ll get HIS back story.
