Gateway Guardians

is anyone else as split as I am about what they think about Jacob and his rival?

My first instinct tells me that they are in some way supernatural. They are ageless, they can make others ageless, they may even be able to take a different form. Theres some kind of supernatural power at play, like they could be Gods, or prophets or angels.

but then another part of my brain kicks in and says ‘that doesnt seem very Lost!’ there needs to be some kind of science behind it rite?

so sometimes I wonder if Jacob and his rival perhaps belong to a larger group, and perhaps this larger group where the first people to discover the islands potential and the first group to move it. maybe they aquired their ‘powers’ in the same way desmond got his, as a result of exposure to energy. I like to call this a time splinter (its sad i know) because our understanding of time is linear. past moves into the fleeting present moves into future. you can only live in the present. But the island doesnt work like that, its a bit like a gateway with access to a non linear time line. past present and future are relative terms and blur. This makes the island unique. It makes it in need of protecting so that its powers are never abused.

so regardless of what they are,or how they got there, I think Jacob and his rival are guardians of the gateway. I think this series will focus on the consequences of ‘time splinters’ people who move the island and change something major in the past. I think season 6 mite reveal this whole thing was one big exercise in universe course correction, that will have to result in making sure the island never existed in the first place. in cleaning up the time splinters (perhaps originally caused by Jacob) and closing up the gateway.
