Jack’s neck
This isn’t my theory. Someone mentioned it to me – but it explains that mark on Jack’s neck and works a little w/what I believe and I liked it so I’ll post it.
(My part – Faraday was never born. He died as his mother drowned when the island sank.)
Faraday was Desmond’s constant. In the ‘new reality’ Des still needs a constant (esp. if he was time skipping while on plane until Jack saved Charlie then disappeared, as someone here so wiseley mentioned).
Jack is now Des’ constant, and as such he picked up some Faraday characteristics.
The mark is Faraday’s neck’s bullet graze.
Other evidence – Jack’s so nervous-acting Sawyer’s new -ism for him is ‘Twitchy’.
I want to like this, but i don’t get why he would have picked up Faradays characteristics. Can you eleborate a bit more?
Hey – it’s not my theory. Maybe just a way to advance the story … or maybe Des just needed a twitchy constant while he skipped throught time – the offset kept him stable ; )
I had thought of this myself! Des lost his constant and so he is skipping through time. I don’t know about the other stuff – I will have to think about that some more! LOL
it’s an interesting thought. Now that i’ve thought about it some more, it makes me wonder why Des would be skipping through time at all though, because if the island sank in 1977 he wouldn’t have sailed to the island and gone through all the things he went through that caused him to start flashing through time in the first place. right? I’m thinking out loud here, i’m not sure i’m right lol
Bailey,
My boyfriend mentioned that if he never crashed on the island, then he would have finished his boat race around the world, and maybe be flying home from Australia where he ended the race. Honestly I don’t remember all of Des’ story history, but it makes sense to me…
Yeah, I understand that for sure – BUT what if all this is one of those WHH’s and the universe is course correcting … so it doesn’t matter whether Shannon’s with her boyfriend or on the plane.
OR, Des is skipping through time and across dimensions/timelines.
IF Des IS skipping, it could be (poor) Charlie is destined to die, regardless of the timeline – just not, yet. [I hope he was on for more than a cameo, like Frogurt, and his part will have relevance.
Just wondering, did they ever show Sayid on the plane? We see Boone and find out why Shannon is not there, but I never saw Sayid. I can’t remember if they showed Claire either.

Hmmmm … stammered there a bit. At least the 2nd time it closed the parenth. Must be a time skip/stick.
2 small events happened on the plane which were so insignificant, they were actually very significant. Firstly the scratch on Jacks neck and then when he’s trying to save Charlie, he can’t find his pen.
We later found out how Jack lost his pen, Kate stole it from him when she came barging out the toilet on the plane. Im guessing also that she probably scratched him at the same time as she was stealing it.
i hope this isn’t true, but with Lost, who knows.
Some folks think that the ALT is actually an epilogue to Lost. If that’s true (I hope not), then maybe Jack got shot and was dying but fortunately was able to “reset.” I’m talkin out my ass at the moment lol.
I think Faraday’s bullet graze was on the opposite side of his neck…I could be wrong
The wound on Jack’s neck seemed very small. But honestly, we never actually saw the wound – only semi-dried blood. Also no one but Jack seemed to take notice of Des appearing suddenly and then seemingly vanishing just as quickly. I think Jack is more in tune with whatever spirtual/supernatural thing is going on which is why he seems to be having deja vu the whole time, and has blood on his neck.
I feel like there is something hidden in his actions with Charlie. He asks for something sharp like a scalpel or pen, but the stewardess says they don’t have any because of regulations. I am pretty sure he was going to punch a hole in his neck and give him a tracheotomy to help him breathe. Could this be the blood on Jack’s neck? Didn’t he perform that procedure on someone on the island? Boone perhaps?
i think you have it backwards. desmond is faraday’s constant. desmond’s constant is penny. desmond doesn’t need faraday.
I’ll have to go back and watch the episode again but I’m pretty sure Jack had that neck injury from the gunfight prior to Juliet detonating jughead. that was my impression when I saw it and thought that they were making an effort to point out that not everything had been changed.
I also agree that without the island Desmond wouldn’t be jumping through time. If you’re right though, I’m not sure what the point would be of having him interact with Jack. He didn’t save Charlie because of Desmond. If anything he was aided by Sayid.
Penny is Desmond’s constant, and Desmond is Faraday’s. While I do agree that Faraday isnt alive in the alternate reality, the rest is way off I think.
Duh, you’re right. ‘Desmond Hume is my constant”.
But – what if …
Desmond isn’t jumping like it’s season 6, but this is one of the season 4 ones ‘we didn’t see’ – so he jumped from the ship to the plane back to the ship (then the island issue isn’t).
AND, Penny’s NOT his constant because island/Widmore sunk. (+/Ellie, whose pic is on Bro. C’s desk implicating Bro.C’s canning of Des exactly while Penny was loading up the wine so they meet in more than a coincidence.)
So, Des needed a different constant when in a time w/o his constant, Penny, and Jack was in the time periods where Penny’s not.
This could still work ; )
If Faraday doesn’t exist in the new timeline due to Eloise’s death, Penny shouldn’t exist for that very same reason. Charles was on the island with Eloise and they surely suffered the same fate (whatever that may have been).
Did anyone notice that we only see the wound in the mirror? Mirror are a big theme within lost that refelects (pardon the pun) duality and the blood clot was maybe foreshadowing “a bleed through” of the events to follow?
cocoadoll,
Sort of like, mirrors are the key to the otherside?! Sounds awesome, but unlikely.
Wait, that got me thinking.
If the Pool is clear, it should be reflective. Maybe The Other Others were trying to get a different Sayid from another universe. The same with Ben.
That is, only if Cocoadoll’s idea is true.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…
cliff, while that is an intriguing thought, Dogan (the other leader) cut his hand and put it in the pool to heal himself. would he be taking just the skin from his alternate self?
True. I was just shooting out a possibility that wasn’t mentioned yet lol.
However, what if Jack’s red mark was the result of Jack getting critically injured on the island and the pool was used to “borrow” some life in the ALT? The pool can not only bring a new person, but heal by borrowing stuff from other dimensions.
That’s a really interesting idea, that people don’t “come back to life”, necessarily, but that their ATL selves are “pulled” through to “replace” them, or something like that..
And this is the first time I’m going to say something that’s been bothering me for weeks.. if you’re going to use the abbreviated “ATL”, which stands for “alternate time-line”, don’t write it ALT.. it’s ATL!! not sure if anyone else is bugged by that seemingly innocuous occurrence.
lol sorry. I use “ALT” to abbreviate “alternate” and not “Alternate Time-Line.” For some reason I think of Atlanta when I see that.
I’ll try to convert! 😛
Oh and if anything thinks my theory is good enough for its own thread, please make one 😛 Apparently my posts won’t pop up for another 3-4 days because I am new here.
Well thanks for the help, cliff87 🙂 Hopefully we can get some of the veterans here to start using ATL more, not having anything to do with T.I. or anything, if only to satisfy my own OCD tendencies..
Welcome to the site, cliff.
This is very interesting dont get me wrong but Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse were on Jimmy Kimmel the night after the premiere and Jimmy asked “When Charlie shows up, Desmond is gone, coincedence or not?” They said “That’s a coincedence, not fate” But this is a more complex and interesting theory you have
