Questions about the Black Rock
Hello, everyone. I have some lingering questions from season 5 concerning the Black Rock, as well as other questions. I am hoping someone here can answer them.
First, I did a little googling on dynamite (which is what the Losties went there to get) and saw that it wasn’t invented until around 1867 by Alfred Nobel, which is after the civil war in America, so this ship certainly would not have been heading there or leaving with slaves. In the 1800’s England began sending their prisoners to Australia and using them to set up penal colonies there. I read up on Australia and found that the last of the ships taking English prisoners to Australia was in 1868. Could the Black Rock have been taking English prisoners to Australia, and not African slaves? This would put them seemingly on the correct path to stumble accross the island.
Now, when Jacob and MiB are on the beach, the ship in the distance is more than likely the Black Rock. But this brings up questions. MiB mentions they are there because Jacob brought them there. But then how did the ship get the middle of the island? It has long been assumed that the island time traveled and ended up exactly where the ship was, beaching it on the island. But in that scene we see it off in the distance, on a clear and calm day for sailing, and when they approached the island they would not have pulled right up to it, but instead would have dropped anchor and send a smaller ship to scout it out.
If anyone has anything to add I would appreciate it – the Black Rock has long been a sticking point from me, and I am wondering if it plays a bigger role than we know, like when we first saw the statue’s foot and now it is a major staple to the show.
Thoughts?

I think the writers just botched the whole Black Rock line up. There are clearly several contradictions, anachronisms and other goofs. They definitely realize all of this and I’m sure that it’s mostly going to get cleared up soon. There is going to be an episode centered on Richard (finally) that will surely answer most questions and hopefully do a decent job of patching up the apparent anachronisms. I’m really looking forward to that one.
I havent done any research on the dynamite so youve got a valid point there, I could be wrong but i always assumed The producers used the real black rock as the black rock on lost. It really was a slave vessel and mined gold to exchange for slaves. I think and dont quote me on this it left from papau new guinea and sailed off in the wrong direction. Which should have put it in the right path to get to the island? As for getting inland i dont really know my best guess is that big ole smokie picked it up and brought it in lol.
Makes sense.
Why do people think it was a slave ship?
Raonak – Im sure people think its a slave ship cause it was used for mining but it also had chains for restraint in the hull for what im guessing were the slave miners…just a guess though
Katie – I also wrote about the dynamite timeline not matching up to the time that the black rock supposedly left from England, I think dynamite was in its very first testing period & wasnt sold at the time the Black Rock left but it could of been brought by Danielle’s team or somebody else, I think we assume its brought by the Black Rock cause its a mining ship & dynamite is obviously a helpful mining tool.
I think its a slave ship due to the bodies chained up inside in season 1…
I feel that the ship could have arrived through a portal or window of sorts as described by Hawking in regards to returning on Ajira.
I think that the island was not anchored at that point, and we could learn it arrived in a manner that the doctor was discovered dead…before he died.
Black Rock is a good mystery…and these are relevant questions to its scenario…nice job
Maybe the Black Rock ending up inland has something do do with the fact that the island can either be flooded or sunk. As it comes up it catches everything above it.
