It only ends once

I believe that Jacob’s and MiB’s conversation is key. We’ve only seen them together once (not counting Flocke) and they have this seemingly ambiguous conversation. Although, we are given a line that seems very important;

“It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.”

Progress…as in progressing toward something. What I believe Jacob means here is something like this… in order to do something right, you have to do it wrong a bunch of times. What if our characters are working there way up towards the right thing? Meaning, the right ending–because it only ends once. I think this shows us that there really aren’t different “Timelines”, just one ending. Meaning, one or the other. Meaning, alternate.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on this. If you have to, re-watch their conversation…

It’s on youtube here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpNJyP23e_0

What is your interpretation?

  1. its also interesting to note how Jacob looks up towards the sky when he says that “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress

  2. Further to your theory–every “timeline” is an attempt to get it right. Jacob keeps sending them back to a different timeline until they can prove him right? In the end, there will only be one path–the one that leads to the redemption of mankind.

  3. imisscharlie- That’s exactly what I mean.

    I feel like no matter how they try to change it, it will just happen in another way. Like, with Charlie dieing. No matter how they try to get off the island, there paths lead them there. So maybe the Alt shows us that they will still end up on the island, just in a different way. So, when they flashed to 2007, they are still on the island but they got there by different means? hmmm..

  4. Sarajs16, after last night’s episode, it seems more and more that even if some outward things change, underlying character traits and events are the same no matter what. Kate helps Claire’s baby be born, Arzt is still a pain in the #@*, Ethan is still a creepy doctor!
