Smokey and Esau are NOT the same!!!!
I cant believe iv never thought of it sooner but would it not make sense that smokey only appears as Esau to Jacob because thats who Jacob cared about the most. So technically Esau is not smokey because Esau is long gone. Smokey just appears as who you care for the most or someone that you will listen too so as to influence things to his advantage. To talk smokey has to take up a human form so even though Jacob knows it isn’t really Esau he still appears as him so they can talk. Examples would be:-
Ben – Mother, Alex, (Locke was for all the Others as they would all listen to him)
Jack – Dad
Kate – Horse (as she didn’t love anyone)
Eko – Brother
And I’m sure i’v missed a few but you get the idea right?
Also while I was recapping the conversation on the beach between Smokey and Jacob from the final episode of last season 1 line stuck out that didn’t sound quite right. In reply to Esau saying it always ends the same Jacob said
‘It only ends once everything that happens inbetween is just progress.’
It just seems strange that apparently our good guy is saying whateva leads upto the END (the big end) is PROGRESS!!! How can that be progress??? this last bit was added on so nothing much to do with the main theory. Plus wasn’t sure where to post so I posted it in Questions and theories andd will change if needed.
Oh and sorry if sumone has already posted this theory.
Thoughts, Ideas etc would be appreciated 🙂

Is it confirmed that his name is Esau?
Yes it is confirmed that the man we see appear on the beach is smokey and is Esau but Smokey can be alot of people so why not for Jacob aswell?
Oh sorry I read ur question wrong lol….no not confirmed and I was thinking it could be Moses as when Ben says he gets marched straight up here as if he were moses Flocke turns and looks at Jacob with a flicker of a grin like thats who he appears to Jacob as.
Ahhh very good idea. An I think what Jacob says is “Anything after that is progress” but im not 100%.
I like your thinking with smokie appearing as whatever is most important it does seem that Jacob recognises MIB instantly though when he comes in as flocke, but IMO this isnt a biblical story, maybe points of religion but as far as main players like moses and esau im not so sure
Interesting ideas, but a few things to consider, smokey also appeared to locke as someone he didn’t even know(christian), so the theory of appearing as whatever they love the most isn’t absolute. I’d say its more a matter of appearing to whomever as whatever will convince them into doing whatever it wants.
Also, the “it only happens once everything else is just progress” seems more to be something that would be referring to some sort of timeloop of which they seem to be the only ones fully aware of.
I agree with Chris… smokie knows human nature very well; he manipulates people by appearing as figures most likely to influence them. Hence the need for Flocke!
Though it hasn’t been totally confirmed, the Christian in Jacobs cabin seems to have been Cerberus or Nemesis(sorry, don’t like Smokie or MIB.)
I’m not entirely convinced that Cerberus and Nemesis are the same but at is a different story
Regardless, I believe there are two Christians – the one with Other-clothes, and the one with suit and Sneakers
(Who, btw, for those of you who missed ut – It believe it’s important)speaks to vincent about Jack as his son – Lost missing peices)
However, regardless of who/what makes all these appearences I thought about Michael having Christian pop up(even introducing himself as Christian if I’m not misstaking . and why would Michael see him)
Claire the same – sure, it’s her father, but she didn’t love him, I’m sure Charlie would have been a better candidate)
Besides, Miles sees her walking away with Christian. I though it could be because if his spiritual powers perhaps, but he only hers things, right?) Any thoughts?
Angivel your right Christian does refer to Jack as his son not only to vincent in missing pieces but to Locke “say hello to my son for me”..where as we have seen MIB) be so not familliar with the people hes talking to i recaqll when hes speaking to Eko,(As yemi) he says “you speak to me as if you are my brother” then he devours Eko lol.
Bing – No he definately says before
Chris63084 – Smokey just appears as who you care for the most OR someone that you will listen too so as to influence things to his advantage.
AngiveL – Yes Christian along with Claire and Sayid are now apart of Smokey….they are infected. So you have an illusion of Christian running around and the real one that is infected like a zombie.
Jenius – I believe Smokey had decided to kill him alredy at this point as he had not been selected by Jacob. He merely said ‘you speak to me as if I were your brother’ so that Eko would realise that it wasn’t just before he died.
a couple of things here.
1) the idea that smokey appears as whoever you love the most is kind of ridiculous. i think he appears as whoever will be the most advantageous for him to appear as (i.e. locke in order to kill jacob, ben’s mom to tell him to wait, alex to tell ben to do what locke says… etc.)
2) i like the idea that the MIB is not necessarily the smoke monster. and what i mean is that is not who he was originally. maybe he doesn’t have a body of his own and only takes over the bodies of the dead.
3) what jacob said was essentially was – it only ends once – everything leading up to that is just progress. that isn’t so cryptic. i mean think about it. it ain’t over till it’s over. it ain’t over till the fat lady sings. i don’t think it has to do with a timeloop as much as it has to do with the fact that things progress and evolve over time.
4) i like calling the MIB or smokey Esau because that was Jacob’s brother in genesis. and later in the Bible it talks about God loved Jacob and hated Esau. and there are biblical references to that (God loves you like he loved Jacob was on the screen when carl was being brainwashed). it sets up the jacob is good (God’s side – light) and esau is bad (God hated – dark).
