At the risk of coming across as an ass hole…
Tas: Can you explain to me how a post called “I HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM” can be in the Theories section of this web site?
I can understand someone who writes an awesome theory but thinks of it as a sort of, kind of, theory and is too insecure to post it in that category 🙂
I can understand someone who has a half-baked idea but affectionaely thinks of it as a full fledged unified theory.
I can understand someone asking a really intriguing question that leads to an in-depth discussion.
I can even understand theories that drift off into aimless chat. 🙂
I am guilty of possibly all of the above!
But how in the name of everything Lost and Found can this post originate in the wrong category?
No offense, friend, I have really enjoyed reading you in the past.
Cliff87 and Highbrow: (apologies for singling you out, there are many others who have done the same, it’s nothing personal towards either of you)
“Revealing Hieroglyphs” pops up in both Theories and Fun categories.
“Locke and His Followers” pops up in both Theories and General Chat categories
“Dharma Initiative, Swan Station and a Little of Everything” pops up in General Chat, Theories and Debates.
please understand. My main peave with this is that every theory posted by a contributor pushes someone else’s contribution off the home page. When you check off multiple categories you come across (in my eyes at least) as someone who is trying to hog space from someone else. When I click on the home page it allows me to brows at a glance for the latest in each subject. A sort of shopping page if you will. When someone cannot make up their minds and just pastes the boards with their contribution it forces me to click on each category seperately.
Call me lazy, but that just annoys the heck out of me!
Okay the debate is open!

I agree with you. My first post on citing refernces was a mistake, I just quickly clicked the bottom box, I’m a visual person and went ‘i want that in the bottom section on home, so click – bottom box. The ‘I have a huge problem’ I put there for selfish reasons, people tend to read the theories first. I know that’s not the way the site should work and I’m sorry for using it like that, but sometimes you need to work around the system. I think the plagarism/ referencing debate should be important and not many people cared when I put something in general.
Please don’t hate me for that 😉
Thanks for speaking out what many of us think, Andre7.
Sometimes things belong in more than one category. If we didn’t want to give people the ability to see all theories or all debates or all fun posts then we wouldn’t separate them… but a lot of times the theory, debate and general areas are exactly the same thing. So if you only put it in theories then someone looking for debates isn’t going to see it.
It would have been pretty easy to set that part of the “write a theory” page as a radio button instead of check boxes so you could only choose one but that would make things harder to find… it doesn’t really matter since people tend to mainly read and comment on theories posted within the last day or so but come on… if you can only put it in one group then I think it would be better if there was just one group and everything fell into it.
Obviously putting posts in Theories and Fun, for example, is an abuse of the ability to post in more than one but Theories and General? Really? That’s a problem?
One time, I put something in the theories section solely for the fact that it would catch people’s eyes, and I’m actually not a bad person at heart, I swear.
I see your issue with this Andre, it makes sense. I don’t want to see people abusing it either, but I’m not going to lose all hope in humanity if it happens.
All forgiven and forgotten already.
See how it’s done?
Oh and by the way Chief I noticed you posted “Wow” just to push this one off the Home page. I had to click on the Debates Icon to find it again to answer.
Bravo! Neatly done ! (LOL) 🙂
