Sayid’s slightly disturbing change of (ahem) heart.

Just a quick question but was anyone slightly disturbed by Sayid at the end of last nights episode? I know there have been dozens of killings throughout the five seasons but the murders by Sayid seemed incredibly dark and evil.

He was sitting quite calmly next to Dogen with Dogen explaining quite a sad tale about him and his son. The next minute, Sayid just grabs him and drowns him and then, just as mercilessly slits the interpreters throat. He then walks out the temple with a dangerous looking smile on his face.

I know that this season is much darker than others but these few minutes just disturbed me slightly. its not that i’m being a nancy boy or anything, i think that its just at the start of the episode, Sayid wants to know why the Others tried to kill him, he then feels (as advised by Dogen) he must kill Nemesis to save himself from becoming evil. At this point there is still some good in him but then there was this almost instantaneous change in him which was a little scary to behold.

Anakin Skywalker anybody?

  1. so…the others are sandpeople! Now I get it!

JK – you’re right, Sayid seemed to flip pretty quickly, without an internal struggle of any sort. I have a theory related to this, that I’m hoping will be approved and posted soon!

  2. I’m curious as to what else Locke said to him. Sayid usually shows some remorse when he kills people but that was cold. Had he been told something that made him feel justified in killing them or was it just. The infection talking?

  3. Ok first things first, the name of this post drew me in like a moth to a flame!
Change of heart by christ! i thought the infection was meant to SLOWLY spread haha.

And not to mention when Ben walks in and tell Sayid to follow.. Sayid just gives him the most EVIL look! If i were Ben i’d have slowly backed away too. It was by far the creepiest ending iv seen!

  4. I found the Ben reaction hilarious. ‘Ok, I think I’ll just quietly leave now, bye bye.”

I don’t think Dogen said the infection spread slowly, just when it reached his heart he wouldn’t be the same person. Maybe the infection spreads more quickly if you have done some really bad things in the past, it can feed off that quicker?

  5. Yeah, I was disturbed by his actions. Ive always liked Sayid. But to go from someone desperate to prove that there is good in his heart, to willing to not only kill Dogen, but everyone else that chose to stay at the temple, all the while seeming very smug about it. I was personally AMAZED he didnt get up and gank Ben too. I would think that what Flocke told him doesnt get more complicated than “you can have Nadia again.”

And why in the hell would Dogen be the source of teh ash’s power? Dogen dies, and the ash is no longer effective. And why couldnt Claire just wipe away the ash to let Flocke in, like someone did at the cabin to let Flocke out?

  6. I_Am_Jacob, I had the same feelings about Sayid killing Dogen. Especially, in light of the heart wrenching story that Dogen had just relayed to him about his son and the deal he made with Jacob to come to ‘the island’.

Sayid has a very tender, kind, loving, compassionate and generous side to him. I think Dogen’s statements pertaining to the ‘tipping’ of the scales for Sayid gives more meaning, when you see the total viciousness and lack of remorse when he kills Dogen.

    Great thoughts and theory!

According to the statements Sayid makes when asked if he was going to leave the Temple, it makes clear, that Sayid has ‘inked’ his deal with Nemesis. The one thing Sayid wants most in life is, to be reunited with Nadia.

Given Sayid’s nature of having two very distinct sides to him, will we see him ‘switch’ again, if he finds out Nemesis is deceiving him?

  7. itsdesmondbrutha, i look forward to reading your theory.

tas, yes i found Ben’s reaction absolutely brilliant which i thought was fantastic acting. I dont think Dogen said anything about the speed of the infection either, i was just shocked at the very rapid change.

SawyersGirl45, i glad you liked the title, i always try hard to make my titles quite entertaining and i agree, the ending was incredibly creepy and was by far the darkest part in the entire series so far i feel..

  8. Dabs, like you say, one minute, you are hearing Dogen pour his heart out to Sayid about his son, the next moment Sayid is drowning him with seemingly no provocation whatsoever.

Sayid, even though he did some bad things, he did seem to have a conscience. I hope that we haven’t seen the last of the good Sayid as it seems it would be quite an unfortunate end for one of the better characters.

  9. I_Am_Jacob, I can’t fathom anything bad happen to Sayid. He has been such a tortured character.

I know there must be a way to destroy Nemesis, and of all the characters, I would expect and hope Sayid might be more than capable of that task.

I just hope that he gets a ‘shot’ at redemption….but you never know.

  10. One thing to keep in mind is Sayid doesn’t have much to lose. He’s primarily used and he doesn’t have a family or anything to go back to. If some obviously non-human thing offered you what you wanted the most (and let’s face it – there’s actually a chance he’ll follow through), why wouldn’t he flip as quick as he did?

  11. I didn’t really make the connection until Tuesday that Saiyd had the two women die in his arms… Shannon & Nadia, I often forget about the relationship between Shannon & Sayid but thought about it when he answered nemisis… (I had just rewatched the episode where she died, and he told her he loved her right before, and she died in his arms after ana lucia shot her.)

  12. Sinister, you do raise an interesting point about Shannon. Knowing how the writers like to mess around with our minds, i dont think it would be such a shock if Sayid was referring to Shannon.
