In the beginning the MIB was just a high ranking prisoner ( maybe egyptian royalty, high priest, general.

What ever ! ) and Jacob was a high ranking official/ warden in charge of his incarceration.

The island was a suitable distant isolated natural alcatraz for the banishment of the MIB.

The temple and statue were built as part of the prison system.

The builders were not initially aware of the island’s wormhole presence and the effects of being

in close proximity.

Both these men developed different X-MEN abilities including longevity. This in itself made them

both ruthless as it made all other humans seem like expendable ephemerals.

The show is about the tail end of a ( very ) long con by the MIB to break out of prison.

For the successful candidate to become the next Warden Jacob needs to have arranged for them to

obtain abilities similar to himself and not be overwhelmed by the MIB.

My money is on Lapidus as destiny wanted him on 815.
