The End?

The thing that has confused me most this season is the sunken Island in the Flash Sideways. I have always believed that the Flash Sideways world is what exists after the end of this season, but wasn’t entirely sure how this would come about. After the last few episodes we can state certain things about the Island in the Flash Sideways world. It was still above sea-level around about 1973, which is when Ben first came to the Island – he talks about the Dharma initiative to his father Roger in the Flash Sideways world. However,  Alex Rousseau is alive and well in the Sideways world, which rather suggests her mother Danielle never made it to the Island – which was around 1988 before. So we can surmise that the Island sank between 1973 and 1988. It seems obvious to me that the Losties might try to sink the Island to contain MIB. But why and how would they would they get it to sink between 1973 and 1988. The most obvious ‘how’ is the Frozen Donkey Wheel. Move the Island back in time before sinking it. ‘Why’ might be due to a wish to reverse/prevent some of the things that have happened on the Island.

I would guess that some very bad stuff is going to happen in the near future. Possibly a lot of people are going to die. I can’t shake the feeling that come the final episode, we might be down to a final few. Moving the Island into the past and sinking it would prevent flight 815 from crashing and possibly save the Losties who might have died leading up to this point. If I had to guess, I would say that Jack and Hurley will be the last men standing. Jack is now the ‘man of faith’ who is willing to make the sacrifice and sink the Island. This would obviously lead to his death. Hurley, due to his connection with Jacob, will find the Frozen Donkey Wheel, turn it, send the Island back to whenever, and be transported to the Tunisian desert and saved.

  1. I’m pretty sure it sunk in 1977 when Radzinsky dug a hole into the energy and the losties weren’t there to stop it and it sucked everything down. I’m sure Dharma had time to evacuate most people.

I think Ben’s dad left the Island when he became a janitor instead of just drinking and dealing (I think this because you would think they’d bring up the crazy evacuation and sinking Island in their chat in “Dr. Linus”)

  2. If this is the case, then what is so important about our flashsideways losties? The writers said what we are watching is important, and if what you say is true, then its not really important at all.

  3. JacobsDoubleWide – I understand that a lot of people think we are seeing two scenarios. One, where the bomb went off and the Island was sunk. The other where it didn’t and the Losties were transported back to present Island time. If that is the case, I don’t really see how the flash sideways world is remotely interesting. I just prefer the possibility that what is currently happening on the Island is what eventually determines the flash sideways.

  4. Penelopedean – Basically, in turning the donkey wheel, Hurley (or whoever) ensures that the Island sinks before 815 flies over it. The Losties never arrive on the Island and are therefore ‘saved’ (instead of dying on the Island in the current timeline). The sideways world then becomes what actually happened to our Losties – although it seems their previous life is influencing them still.
