A Rehashing of “The Constant”? + Crazy Thoughts

Ahh! The site is back up! It’s been far too long, friends. 😉 In any case, let me throw this out blindly before the new ep airs, apologies if it’s repetitive and/or scatterbrained.

We can already tell from promos this next ep is going to be Desmond-centric (finally). They play bagpipes in the commercials–a tune you often hear in funerals I might add– and we know the only thing more Scottish than dear Des are bagpipes.

I know, dear reader, that you must hate theories based on feelings, but I have a feeling that the writers are going to want to redo a form of their favorite episode, “The Constant”.

This was a great ep for many reasons, from what I recall: Every component of the show converged– it wasn’t too character-centric (well, except for Des I guess), DHARMA-centric, or 815-survivor centric. It actually brought us a load of answers, or at least opened doors to explanations of what may be going on on the Island… We started to gain intriguing theories/debates for Whatever Happened, Happened and all that television sci-fi physics jazz.

I think they would redo a similar type of episode (I want to say with this week’s ep, this might be their chance to do it, though much more Des-centric), because in “The Constant” they point out Eloise Hawking and Daniel Faraday as integral to explaining how timelines might work and whatnot, and haven’t utilized them too much since maybe the Lamp Post ep. This is also the ep where I started to see how impt Des was, since with Dan’s help, he was able to somehow affect what goes on in different points in time. This is where I began to believe that Des was everyone else’s Constant, though I kept calling him a catalyst of sorts. (Hence a hidden meaning behind the title of the ep? Hehe.)

I’ve been waiting for them to bring back Daniel Faraday (as you might guess from my avatar) so he can start explaining the science of things again! And alter time! Wheee!

They also re-introduced Charlotte in Recon, which I think foreshadows the writers are prepping to explain more about the “physics” of it all, including more on the Island energy, plugs/corks, time, etc.

I am just throwing this idea out there… thoughts? I don’t recall the ep that clearly, wish I could watch it again before posting this…

SUPERFLUOUS THEORIES: 1) "Uh-oh," said by Miles, is the biggest answer we'll get. 2) Last scene is Vincent opening his eye from his dog nap. 3) Series spin-offs will include "Hurley and the Search for the Last Cheese Curd" and a Lifetime Original Movie "Run Away and Blow Up The Stepfather Who Turned Out to Be Your Dad: The Kate Austen Story".

  1. I’m sooo excited about tonight’s Desmond episode! Since it appears that he is now separated once again from Penny, this is going to be a great episode where we see him fight to find her (i hope).

  2. Def, ClaireBlueEyes! I’m excited. I’m esp excited to see them explain the whole physics of it all further… and to hear Des go “Pen-nay” a la Forrest Gump’s Jenny.

I’m a bit bummed out though because I think Des is gonna die…

Movies, schmovies, Sinster! 😀 Don’t log in, lest you read a spoiler though…

  3. I haven’t much time to take in the episode tonight. But about half way through I had a revelation… What is the “constant” is not a who… but a what… Love!

As soon as I finished watching tonight’s episode, I found myself needing to find the song Charlie wrote and sang in I believe season 2. Take a listen… and see the words through a whole new prism then we did in Season 2.

  4. Fabulous video to support your idea, Quazarr… I just commented on a theory from obsessedwlost in the forum… he/she talks about how Love is the constant. You should post it there too!

“Together we can be saved.” I think I’m going to barf, though. 😉

  5. Bagpipes – I focused on the song … one I’ve long thought was the idea for the show.

“I once was LOST, but now am found” (This year’s theme: Destiny)

    But, yeah – it’s Des.

AND WHH (since characters *in the know* keep saying it). (And, apparently George, true communication agent that he is, is impt. to flashing Des. Wonder if he’ll die in his arms again, *sigh*.)

Congrats, BTW, to all those who long ago predicted he would merge the timelines – though perhaps it’s kinda’ really Charlie since Des didn’t remember Jack. (Hmmm… does Jack love Des and not Kate!?!)

  6. waycurious: Good thought on the bagpipes… so I guess that’s Amazing Grace?

I’m really excited about the merging timelines, I wish I could remember who was attacking me in the comments of another theory saying the merge was impossible! But then again, I guess he/she could rub one of my own failed theories in my face as well. Hehe.

You think the red shirt thing is absolutely definite? I keep waiting for Des or Hurley to die as a sacrifice of sorts.

Sinster: That makes me gag, but it’s looking to be the idea.

It definitely falls in line with the fact that for whatever reason the products of some of the biggest love stories on the show (Sun/Jin, Desmond/Penny)– their children– are somehow being prevented from existing (Sun being shot, Desmond being kept from Penny).

What is bugging me the most from that last episode is the idea of timing, and what the Losties “need”… it’s like Eloise was once again trying to force things to go on as they were. She repeats that oft-debated line “Whatever happened, happened” but I can’t help but recall how she stopped Desmond from changing his mind at the ring shop in order to alter time…

I think this is where I need to make a new post. Hehe.

  7. Sinster: I also was wondering what you make of the fact that Daniel specifically identified Des as his constant… unless you think they don’t understand the idea of the constant just yet? Ooo, dramatic irony…

Off-topic PS, but I’m guessing Jenny would be Forrest’s constant 😉
