The Manifest
Written 7th April
Why does Desmond want the manifest and what does he plan to show the others??
I read a theory on this site (sorry, no idea who from, it was late) and it made some comparisons to Desmond waking up on the island after touching penny’s hand in slu to Jack’s waking up in the pilot (and after the Ajira crash, i think). There was certainly some similarities there and it got me thinking, what if Jack’s body had been placed in the jungle, and him waking up was actually a result of him jumping between the timelines..? And then i thought that it could explain why he and the others survived the crash – they were never on the plane!
I think this could be what Desmond has figured out and what he wants the manifest for. He is going to show the others that they are not on the manifest and were never on the plane…

The losties would be on the manifest – because Hurley correctly identified that Ethan wasn’t on the plane and used it to give eulogy for those who died on the flight (to “Craphole Island”)
BUT, maybe he was going to take it with him to Sidewaysville …
Doesn’t he mean the 815 that DIDNT crash?
Because they are actually ON the island, except for those who are dead. And he is going to show that the Alt timeline ISNT real. And Desmond has just figured this out through Faraday and his vision of Charlie and Penny etc.
Don Martinez
MUUUyy BIEEEN.
I really like this and it makes perfect sense. Jack is the candidate, the chosen one. Him waking up in the jungle is him time flashing! Who is his constant though?
His father? It seems a loved one must be it, and he did love his father regardless of all their trials and tribulations.
So … “Happily Ever After” only happens in fairy tales …
donmartinez – That is an awesome theory.. I think you are on to something with them not being on the manifest — maybe the one in ALT REALITY — I am not sure how it will play out but got chills thinking about that.
nachochris – I think a connection obviously, but not actual “love” has to be a factor for the constant as Daniel noted Desmond as his constant.
That would be nuts, don martinez!
lostonlongisland: I agree. I would hate for just plain “love” to be the constant, but more the person who is meant to be in your life and alter its course– and hence why when they come across these people in the alternate timeline (whether in their mind or for real), they get that strange deja vu feeling.
(Glitch in the Matrix, if you will ;))
I have to admit though, I still find it plausible that Daniel may not have understood his own theory correctly in marking Des as his constant. It could very well be his beloved Charlotte…
… and oh, don martinez, I meant nuts in a GOOD way.
I like this idea however i think Des is going to grab the manifest to gather all our Losties together again and show them the other timeline where they were all connected their trials and tribulations to what end i dont know.
When Des woke up in the shack they said hed only been unconscious for a matter of moments yet he experienced a much longer time frame
I don’t know if love would be the only constant. Daniel wrote in his journal that Desmond should be his constant.
I think he wants the manifest so that he can find all of the people on the flight and show them the truth.
Desmond is a ‘fix it’ man for Widmore, given the names he has enough resources to find all of them, similar to how Locke did in s5 when assisted by Widmore.
