Raised by another
This might just be a coincidence (but I highly doubt it). But it seems to me, that if one arrives on the island pregnant…the child (children) will be raised by someone else.
Danielle arrived via ship wreck/gave birth to Alex — Raised by Ben
Claire arrived via plane crash/gave birth to Aaron — Raised by Kate
Claudia arrived via ship wreck/gave birth to Jacob and MIB –Raised by “Mother”

It happened to Sun as well. Although she got pregnant on the island, she and Jin were (safe to say they aren’t now) on the island without Yi-Jeon (don’t know if thats how you spell it) so technically, she is now being raised by another too..
good call…i did not include Sun and Ji Yeon as Sun got pregnate on island and gave birth off island….but you are absolutly right….she is being raised by another as well.
There are also the crazy mums of kids born on the island (although Jacob and MIBs mum wasn’t technically their parent).

Also, Ethan might fit in with that theory too..his parents Horrace and Amy were killed in the Dharma purge, I don’t know how old he was when the purge happened; but he was younger than that scene where him and Ben kidnapped Alex, he was around 10 I suppose then..
thanx for pointing that out…..I thought of Ethan too, but did not mention him cuz I wasn`t sure of his age at the time of the purge either

Nice theory…so simple, yet this is really the first Ive seen it put together like this.
But lets not forget the most important character (to me at least) who was “raised by another”…and that character is none other than John Locke.

… Was born off the island, but was he conceived on the island or off?
i thought about this too, great post. just going back to the Claires convo with the physic and how he tells her she must raise him or else. That could be the same issue MIB has or it could have just been misdirection by the writers, who knows at this point.
Andre7 — Was Miles born off the island? Do we know that? All I know is that he was a baby on the island, wasn’t sure if we ever knew where he was born.
Miles wasn’t technically raised by another in my mind, although his father didn’t make it off the island, i’m pretty sure that Miles’ mother made it off with baby Miles.
Great post…don’t think Ji Yeon counts as Sun willingly gave Ji Yeon to her own mother for safe keeping so she could go to the island and look for her husband. In the three cases you’ve mentioned in this post, the babies were taken by force or because of circumstances..
Also, I wish the writers would TELL US why Aaron HAD to be raised by Claire as instructed by the psychic back in Season 1….They put so much emphasis on that and if they don’t explain it…that will be a HUGE disappointment…
