Desmond’s Destiny

Written 13th April

After the most recent episode it is easy to see that Desmond is going to be a key component in connecting the ALT and original timeline and this is due to his strange immunity to electromagnetism. This phenomenon most likely occurred when Desmond flipped the failsafe key in the swan station, but Faraday also stated that the Swan emitted small amounts of electromagnetism as a type of natural failsafe, but the numbers must be typed in. This leads me to believe that Desmond was “sent” to the island in order to slowly become immune to the subtle releases of electromagnetism. Similarly, we know that Widmore was the person who has always wanted to test on Desmond with electromagnetism. And from way back we can remember that it was Widmore who told Desmond that if he sailed around the world, he could marry his daughter. Unfortunately, Widmore knew Desmond would crash there and Kevin was stationed in the Swan to teach Desmond the ropes of the timer and failsafe key. We all know that Kevin wasn’t actually part of Dharma, but he also stayed away from his fellow others and chose to live in the Swan with Desmond. This could be because he remained loyal to Widmore and not the new-comer/non-islander Ben. Also, Desmond’s strange behavior after his “flash-sideways” in the most recent episode, could lead the viewer to understand that whatever happened, happened. Perhaps, even in the ALT timeline nothing is different in the long run. This fact is made more obvious when Sayid shows up and Desmond is willing to follow him without losing that goofy grin that he had just recently given to Widmore. He’s basically feeling like “Whatever, it’s still going to end the same way”. And this could either be a good ending or a bad ending, but it really doesn’t matter to Desmond, he can’t change “destiny”. And I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of Desmond in the other character’s ALT timeline soon enough.

I've been a lost fan since the beginning, but I wasn't a lost addict until the end of the 3rd season. Lost is simply the most engaging show of all time because it taps into so many universal themes. All the haters are the ones who either don't understand it or they have never seen it.
