Who Do You Miss?

On a site like this it’s easy to get wrapped-up entirely in thoughts of mythology, origins, and philosophy. Sometimes I forget how emotionally connected I am to the show; not sure how many other fans feel the same way. Then I find myself listening to “Oceanic 815”, a track off the Season 1 score by Michael Giacchino; what a beautiful song. I start thinking about all the people we’ve Lost over time. Who is it that you miss?

Of course missing Jin and Sun, but that’s still fresh. I certainly don’t miss Charlie; he was just damn annoying.

I certainly do miss John Locke. One perhaps unexpected part of a Season 6 episode in which I nearly cried was in “The Last Recruit”, when Jack tells Smokey, “John Locke was the only one of us who ever believed in this place”. Flocke replies, “John Locke was not a believer, Jack; he was a sucker”. I thought to myself no.. no way is Locke a sucker. He was used by Smokie but Locke did believe in something real and he did find himself a purpose on that Island and it was real. Locke spent his whole life before the Island as a sucker; he was transformed when he came to the Island, and he was happy. I refuse to believe he was a sucker all along and I know he’s not. That line from Smokey really got me upset because I miss John Locke.

Started watching Lost in September 2009; finished Seasons 1-5 in 20 days.. my wife was not thrilled during this time. I am a believer in John Locke and that he may somehow still play a key (and good) role on the island.

  1. Talking about Locke, my favourite moment of his was in the Alt timeline. He, Ben and Arntz were sat in the staff room and Ben was moaning about the principal. Locke just turns to Ben and says “why don’t you try for principal?”

It was just a nice scene with Locke, he’d been a substitute teacher for such a short period of time but was telling Ben to run for principal. I don’t know why but ive just loved this bit.

  2. John is obviously my favorite character, and although O’Quinn plays a hell of a monster/MIB, playing Locke…its just not John Locke…

My favorite scene, unfortunately was possibly the beginning of his downfall from a storytelling perspective.

When he, Sawyer, Juliet, and the others caught Widmore and his pal in the 50s…Widmore breaks the other others neck, and takes off running…John eyes him up with a clear shot…then puts the rifle down.
Upon Sawyer snapping “What the hell?”…

John looks very sincere when he says, “Because he is one of my people”

I seldom speak during the show, but I couldnt help whispering, “Hes starting to believe…”

This of course ultmately led to his murder, turning the wheel, and MIB taking over and using Ben to kill Jacob…but still a great scene…

Im hoping in the long run his death holds more value.

  3. I miss Charlie..
I also miss Walt, I love his character, even if he was a little creepy.. but i hope he comes back, I want to see why he’s so special!!

  4. I miss Juliet.

Miss Mitchell has the most beautiful and haunting smile. I could never tell what she was hiding.

She was a very strong yet vulnerable character. I was hoping she would take Jack away from Kate there for a bit.

  5. Andre7 – I’m right behind you on that one – I loooove Jules
(And even though I totally support Elizabeth’s Erika on V I still miss her on Lost)
Sadly, I kinda knew right from the beginning she’d die, but I have not given up hope on seeing her again..

Sun and Jin is still fresh indeed – however they were(“were” as in the sense, that the Losties we all know and love/hate who have died on the Island – are gone…Unless off course the Alt Universe’s “version” of them realeases their entire memories)
without doubt two of my favorite characters..

But goddammit – I so miss Locke – the real John Locke.. His part in the Lost mythology can’t be over . that would sooo piss me off..

  6. @ A.E.S., I know exactly what you mean. When I see Terry O’Quinn, playing the Smoke Monster impersonating John Locke, it is sooo not the same thing. I get what you’re saying about the ATL Locke because even though it’s not the Island-Locke we’ve fallen in love with, it’s sort of a reminder when I see that smile of his and hear those wonderfully simple yet enlightened quips of his just how much I miss John Locke.

  7. Amen to Charlie being annoying. Geez Inquisitor, how do you get away with saying something like that and not have half the site saying they LOVED Charlie? Whatever you did, good job.

I miss Locke as well as everyone else, but believe it or not, I kinda miss Boone. When he wasn’t being obsessed with his incest (I know there was no blood relations, but it’s still gross in my eyes) with Shannon. He wanted the best for everyone. He was always trying to help, and never asked for anything in return. Sure, he failed left and right like a total loser, but he tried.

  8. haha! I agree that Charlie was becoming somewhat annoying. But yet, I still miss him. Being a LOTR’s fan Dominic Monaghan was the reason that I tuned into the Pilot episode in the first place. I was also a Terry O’Quinn fan and I didn’t even know he was in it until it aired. So, I was pleasantly surprised!

Terry is an amazing actor, and I agree… I miss the real Locke. He is doing an amazing job of playing MIB, but it’s definitely not the same.

Though I liked Juliet as a character, I don’t miss that smirk of hers. No matter what the situation, it was always that same damn smirk… Anyone else know the smirk or am I over exaggerating? lol!

But, I really miss Eko. I often wonder what would have happened to his story if Adewale didn’t want out!

  9. @elsewhere, LOTR was all I could think of when I was watching the “pilot”, especially when they’re on the hill listening to the French transmission for the first time and he starts yelling “the French! the French!” Damn hobbit..
