The Islands Eye
The eye is a repeated image throughout the series. So, what is the importance of the eye or the opening of the eye?
Well… The only name the creators have ever given to the island is “Eyeland.” So, why Eyeland? I think the light in the cave is just that. It’s the islands eye, its pineal gland, its minds eye.
The pineal gland rests in the center of the brain in a tiny cave, sometimes referred to as the cave of light. The pineal gland is the body’s timekeeper and the cave of light seems to be the islands timekeeper.
The pineal gland is called the gland of enlightenment, as it has the ability to be awakened. When awakened it is said to make a loud popping sound. The very first image that we ever see is of Jack opening his eye, and we also hear a loud popping sound at this exact same moment. Is this Jack being awakened on the way to enlightenment? I think so!
“I looked into the “eye” of the island and what I saw was beautiful.” So, did Locke stumble across the cave of light? I know that we have been told that only the islands protector can find this light, but was Locke so in-tune with the island that he was allowed to see it? Was he supposed to be the true replacement and did Jacob allow him to see it? Well, I think it’s possible that the “eye” Locke once spoke about was not the monster as we once thought, and it was not another light version of the monster, but it was in fact the “cave of light.”
Other things throughout the show that may have been a hint in this direction include:
A bird’s navigation system is their pineal gland. It’s basically their internal compass that monitor’s the electromagnetic field. (Par Avian)
Some scientists believe that this navigational system also exists in the human pineal gland but lies dormant, but has the ability to be awakened.
Walt had the ability to control a bird’s navigation.
The first Lost Experience had a web site called Let Your Compass Guide You.Â
Locke gives his compass to Sayid who asks him, “Don’t you need this?” Which Locke replies, “Not anymore.”
When Locke teaches Walt how to throw the knife he tells him to see it in his minds eye.
Many Age of Enlightenment philosopher names have been used throughout the show.
Richard Alpert/ Baba Ram Dass studied the effects of hallucinogens and meditation to alter your state of consciousness as a way to reach enlightenment.
Locke has dabbled with both hallucinogens and meditation to reach an altered state of consciousness and become one with the island.
The pineal gland is also connected with ESP/Extrasensory Perception.
Pineal Gland abnormality has been proposed as a possible cause of schizophrenia.
There is a quote from Descartes on the blaster map!

Terry O’Quinn was in a show called Earth 2. Terry’s character was behind the plot to harvest a child’s pineal gland. Terry O’Quinn was the only original cast member to be called and offered a part on LOST without auditioning!
The creators have also stated that they are big fans of Robert Anton Wilson, so I throw this last one in especially for AES and Achalli — “Consult your Pineal Gland.”
I know there will be other things that come to mind, but this is all I have at the moment… Thanks for reading, and I hope I didn’t take away valuable minutes of your life that you will never get back! 🙂

FYI it’s on cosmic channel number 23. Very well done Elsewhere. I’ve never seen Earth 2 so I wouldn’t have made that conection. I buy into this.
This was an amazing post! Glad I got a chance to read it before the finale tonight, thanks elsewhere!
Could the mind’s eye be connected to some of the characters’ ability to see spirits?
I also wonder if Desmond’s ‘mind’s eye’ is allowing him to navigate the space-time continuum, i.e. travel through imaginary space/time… and as the “consciousness reality” of the ALT ‘bleeds’ for each character, is it actually the awakening of that portion of the mind’s eye – thereby connecting the realities – for each character?
The light has been referred to in theories as a ‘divine light’ within each of us, a ‘touch’ of life – not enough to give immortality, but enough spark life as we know it: “I think, therefore I am”. Spinning that to a different perspective of the light as a “mind’s eye” does not refute this theory, but almost seems to compliment it or to strengthen it… which is really amazing…
Anyhow, great job using those clues to piece this together!
Awesome post, I too recently had a flashback recently about what John said about the Island – I have looked into the eye of this Island and what I saw was beautiful..
I don’t think he stumbled upon it, it would seem you can’t find it unless you know where it is(Don’t know if it moves like the cabin, but..)
First time they were blindfolded(Jacob and Nemesis)the second time Jacob was shown, the third he had no trouble finding his way.
I don’t know how that works with Nemesis though, he wasn’t blindfolded when Jacob dragged hom – though beaten and probably didn’t think of where they were going..
But good post:)
Maybe Mikhail could see into the island’s eye.. and that’s why he lost his own?? I’m just being mental lol.. good theory! i like this alot!!
Before I respond to any comments I just wanted to add that I also believe in the idea of the light being a meteor/meteorite. There are plenty of clues to support it…
But, I am having a hard time applying a meteorite to the line; “a little bit of this very same light is inside of every man. But they always want more.”
So, what if there was a meteor/meteorite and it gave the island life… Literally! It made the island sentient; it made it conscious and alive, aware. The meteorite becomes the island’s eye therefore making the island its own character, a living character with a purpose and meaning.
Oh, and blaster map, should be blastdoor map… I typed it in word and I didn’t catch the auto correct. And, I’ll try to get to your comments shortly… I have a house full of company that I didn’t know were coming! Urgh!
Great post elsewhere…glad to see you get another one in before the finale…thanks for the shout out…I can see this relating to both Illuminatus and Lost very nicely!
Great job, and a message to everyone…”Let go”, and enjoy the show!!!
Achalli, I loved Earth 2. I don’t think it was given a chance and it was canceled after the first season. There are tons of other connections that I could make between the two shows but there are way too many to mention here… Lets just say, Earth 2 was a hot topic in theories shortly after Lost aired.
Clairespeanutbutter, I definitely think the minds eye is connected to the ability to see spirits… It can be considered the gateway to the higher realm. Vibrations allow the minds eye to see things that are not visible to those not in-tune with those vibrations. (Think, Good Vibrations)
As far a Desmond, I agree with what you are saying… Interesting to note that I used to post on the ABC forum and there was a post that I participated in back in the day pertaining to the eye imagery that surrounds Desmond… Some for example include the shape of the outer Swan Hatch inwhich he resided, the windows in the Swan, his meeting with Ruth with the eye cut out in the staircase, and right down to the shape of the ring that he bought for Penny.
AngiveL: Yeah, not sure if Locke did stumble upon it… But, he seemed to be the most in-tune with the island. So, I really do believe this is what he saw!
henentink, lol! An eye for an eye!
AES, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you all for the kind words and comments… You have all been great! And, you will all be missed once this is all over! Hey, we could always start a book club, considering there is nothing else on TV that keeps my interest these days! Just a thought!
