*Island Flashbacks*
I have stayed pretty quiet this season, have not posted many theories/questions or commented much but I have been reading everyones posts. I have to say I was a bit disappointed as well.
Not so much as to say “I am going to erase season 6 from my mind and LOST sucks” but I definitely agree that this season/finale was a total cop out.
The writers created this whole world full of mystery and dragged us through it for 5 years, at the end we all thought we would finally get some answers.
I have seen people on THIS SITE write theories for how the show should end and evidence behind electromagnetism that were much more compelling then saying “there is a big hole under the island with a stone in it, the stone must stay in place, temporarily take it out to kill the smoke monster”
LOST is known for having such amazing continuity, when I found out why Richard had been visiting Locke throughout his life my jaw dropped. But this season just didn’t click.
1. The Ash – ok I guess it means nothing
2. The numbers – it’s chalk on a wall, great!
3. The Light Cave – this created the smoke monster, bullshit but ok, Desmond is uniquely resistant to electromagnetism, ok. Jack is also? All you have to do is pull out that stone and the monster is gone, bullshit.
4. The Cabin – how in the world could they leave this out. They have been talking about this cabin for 3 seasons and showed it in the season 5 finale, yes they burned it, I just have no idea why. Why is there ash around it, who trapped MIB in or out of there, why was a piece of Jacob’s tapestry pinned to the wall, etc forever…………..
It seems like the writers just dropped the ball and said fuck it, we are telling our own, new story.
In a perfect world, run by me (of course), all of season 6 would have been ISLAND FLASHBACKS.
Fuck the flashsideways, thats how the covered up the fact that everyone figured out the island was purgatory in season 1.
ISLAND FLASHBACKS
Since the first episode they could have shown Egyptians arriving, Jacob purposely picking out his first group of candidates. Seeing his conversation with MIB, how the game would be played, seen the rules laid out so we dont have to fucking guess!
Across the Sea could have been in the middle!
Since then we could have seen MIB manipulate other people to finish the wheel. See people build the statue for Jacob and the underground tunnels.
See how/why the DI chose to use hieroglyphics in the swan hatch.
See Alvar Hanso come to the island and start the DI.
See how the purge happened,
What the significance of The Cabin is.
Basically Island Flashbacks would have sealed the deal and made the true fans happy instead of just confusing everyone with pointless flash sideways scenes all season.
Now I am just ranting, sorry….. I want/ed ISLAND FLASHBACKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have been saying that since the first episode of this season. island flashbacks. i had a hunch that it would end this way in the flashsideways but i thought it would end at the concert. not the church . u are rite it was a cheesy cop out way cause we all said it was purgatory in season one. island flashbacks would have been the shit but they jumped the shark and went for the private pratice viewers…. verry bad ending
I fully agree. To hell with the flash sideways!
They said they would answer all important questions. Apparently they didn’t really think there were very many important questions. And the answers they came up with are often not really answers. Smokey is the result of a body drifting into the holy light mixed with water? Hmm…
Every answer was a cop out because they didn’t really have answers.
The Whispers – dead souls stuck on the island? Why does Ben say that “if you hear whispers, run the other way” They didn’t have a real answer they just created one.
Christian – we all thought MIB had lied because we saw Christian off the island and on the freighter, he gave conflicting advice and was constantly dressed differently – another cop out. Yea it was me!
The Cabin – I still can’t believe they just said “Fuck it”, they had no idea how to explain this because they made it all up as they went along, no backing.
INFLATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If they ended season 5 and said Josh, go ahead and finish it, it would have been awesome.
Everyone would have died and no1 could ever kill the smoke monster.
Jack as the new Jacob and Locke sitting with him on the beach having the same debate (hence why it always ends the same, all progress)
Continuity would have been everything for me, since season 1 episode 1.
Your statement that they made it up as they went along made me think of this one:

I really think they did make it all up as they went.
Amazing continuity in the beginning, it all kind of just died after that. They had no way to provide a solid answer because all of the evidence was conflicting.
People like us, the theorists were too smart and clever, we came up with better stuff then they did.
The black and white rocks at the end were a big – “Look we knew what we were doing” – oh really? BULLSHIT, they created a purpose, season 6, around those two rocks!
I’d bet my right arm
I think they created the beginning and the end and then just made it up all the story in-between.
They knew that Jack was going to sacrifice and the rest of the survivors would finally leave the island.
My theory is that at first the idea was that they really died in the island. That’s why Christian body was missing, why losties saw dead people around and the whispers. But the writers, after the feedback for fans thought it was so insulting to viewers that decided to create the flash sideways as a limbo. That’s why they made Christian remark that everything in the island was real. It was a fail safe for the end when the writers made a real mess of the story.
The point is the ending was great, but it could be so much better. They could have given us answers as well, if they really had any.
