Was ‘you have to get back to the island’ red herring?

They didn’t need Jack, etc. back to stop the flashes, they were stopped when John put the wheel back – so only John had to come back … so why did Ben/Mrs. H. insist they all had to go?

  1. We have not seen that yet, for they have just returned. John turned the wheel before he left to get the O6. The “flashes”, are not the biggest problem on the island at this point, the war coming is. The O6 had to return to make the flight seem like 815, proxys to the cause, martyrs without the death…at least yet.
Ben makes it very clear that they will not be returning again from the island. He knows things, messing things up is not a part of his plan. The O6’s return, is the only shot Benjamin has to find the island again. That is why he allowed them to leave to begin with.

  2. Did Ben allow them to leave? I thought he didn’t know or care who was gonna die on that freighter or if anyone survived.

When Ben beat the Life out of Keamy and he died he knew the Freighter would blow up because of whatever Keamy had rigged to his heart rate and I’m pretty sure he didn’t know who was on it. For that matter who was gonna live or die.

Side note Ben kicks But Keamy, Sawyer in the cage when Sawyer tried to electrocute him, and the two Palestinians. He takes a punch too. I wonder where this all started.

  3. OK, he may have needed to O6 to get back … but why did Ben spin the wheel in the first place?

Did he know enough that it could bring him back to a time before the purge (perhaps to kill Penny)? Eloise gave a pretty small window of opportunity.

Did it need to be spun? [John was supposed to have done it according to Christian.]

Did he not know about the ‘dying-to-get-back’ thing John was told (and possibly Christian and some others … )

  4. I don’t have time right now, But this interesting and makes me think about Michael because he was Bens plant on the freighter and the one who came up with the Idea of freezing the battery or whatever he did to allow the 06′ to get away from the Freighter, But who released him. Christian and remember what he told Locke about Ben. When are you gonna learn not to listen to him. Not yet

  5. Last thing. What I meant was that Christian released Michael remember he said”You can go now” to Michael and I wonder if this foiled part of Ben’s plan.

  6. If fixing the wheel was what actually stopped the flashes from happening then why didn’t the Losties end up in ancient times (when the statue was still there)?

  7. John turning the wheel stopped the flashes (whether it was putting it back where it belonged or because HE was supposed to spin it.)

Evidence: It wasn’t long after the flashes the nosebleeds began (maybe a residule effect from ‘the purge’ for those who left unprepared before it?)

The skips stop and then it’s 3 yrs before they see Jack etc. (who have been gone 3 yrs.)

Perhaps Ben’s plan was to let them leave and for him to ride the time-wave back to pre-purge (perhaps to ensure Penny still there). Eloise H’s timeframe was rather defined, perhaps to get back to the 70s he had to come back at a certain time.

If that’s true, then the ‘you have to go back’ bit was another ploy to exploit someone’s emotional weakness to get them to do what he wants.

  8. The three years between 1974 and 1977 are the years to O6 spent off the island.

Unless they tell us we aren’t really going to know so I guess we need to assume that Foundies had to return to the island to be reunited with the Losties in order for island time to right itself. The only way we’ll know if it wasn’t important is if we see John Locke turn the wheel and shack up with some floozy instead of telling them that they need to go back… If he can do that and still get things back on track then we’ll know that it was just turning the wheel alone that fixed things.

  9. If you needed the O6 to return to the island there is a time schism in that the O6 would have been gone 3 yrs and then on the island the 3 yrs everything was hunky dorey for the rest of the losties – so they would be gone 6 yrs. during the time shifts (which I guess could have been 6 yrs.)

To believe the losties had to come back to save their buddies is to assume Ben told them the truth – and let’s face it, who are you going to believe, Ben … or your own lying eyes?

  10. waycurious, Locke would not have been able to return to ‘the island’ without the remaining ’06’.

It was imperative they recreate the original events that brought them to ‘the island’ in the first place aboard #815.

While it is true, that ‘the flashes’ stopped when Locke turned the FDW, Sawyer and company remained stuck in the 70’s.

  11. But, did Ben care about Locke until HE wanted to get back to the island. (I think he just wanted to get off the island to kill Penny.)

I don’t even think Ben knew about the ‘dying-to-get-back-to-the-island’ thing, nor that Locke would still be alive (note how sincerely sad he was when he said he’d miss him … after he murdered him.)

I DO think the O6 will help the losties, but that’s ‘cuz they always do and not because Ben wanted them back to do it. (I think Ben wanted to go back to before the purge so he could keep his promise by making sure Penny dies in it this time – and he’s wrong he has that kind of power, for as Scottie says, “You canna’ change the laws of physics!”)
