I think there has been pretty dramatic evidence that the original culture of the island spent a great deal of time under the ground. Most (if not all) of the underground Dharma stations appear to coincide with ancient structures and all of the ancient above-ground structures we have seen lead to chambers under-ground. Also given all of the “underworld” symbolism that has sprung up recently there is plenty of room for that kind of thinking. It’s also interesting to note that the Lighthouse was underground. The recurring theme seems to be the Earth’s electromagnetic field so being underground gets you closer to the source.
I think that this maybe this seasons big reveal. A large cavernous area under the island. It is a safe haven as no one who has not lost their innonence cannot enter and would, for me explain the other avenue to the fdw. Possibly how Christian gets to Locke whilst urging him to turn the key. The historical significance of this I do not know but I am sure it would instantly provide us with an insight to the origins of the others.
It also helps to explain how the others get around without noise, etc. – by using underground pathways. Speaking of, where are those others in present 2007 while Ben, Locke, Sun, etc. are prancing around? Why hasn’t Ben or Locke found them?

I meant to write turn the fdw. Sorry.
