Charlie and smokey
What’s Charlies relation to the smoke monster? in the second part of the pilot (Episode 1, Season 1) Charlie nervously taps on his plane seat with his “Shaft” ring and makes a sound unmistakebly similar to the sound the smoke monster makes. What’s the deal? is the similarity metaphorical or is there more to it? is smokey a JUNKIE?;

I just watched that scene and the only sound I can hear is the tapping of the ring on the seat armrest. The only thing it sounds like is a ring tapping! Perhaps some similarity to the tapping of morse-code but that’s all.
Could you elaborate specifically when this happens (Mins & seconds on your dvd) and also which sound specifically related to smokey did you mean, as smokey makes several noises.
If I remember correctly (I’ll double check as soon as I get the chance), a good example is the moment Echo meets the monster for the first time. Charlie while on the tree says: “Run, Run” and then for half a second or so before you hear the typical monster roars you distnictly hear the taps- though you can clearly see Charlie ISN’T the one doing the tapping.
