Jughead go Boom!!
I want to know if anyone has any ideas on how on earth, Jack and co are going to detonate a 1950s type Hydrogen bomb. A bomb that by its very nature was very unstable (no such thing as ‘inherent safety’), not designed to be stockpiled, components are degrading fast and from what we know it’s encased in concrete!
Not going to happen!! Lost will have lost it if we see Jack (the surgeon) performing complex procedures on the bomb…..in my opinion it would be a far stretch for a ‘physics’ like Dan to do! Even someone with intrinsic knowledge of H-Bombs would struggle with a 1950s model in such a state!

Shoot, Daniel didn’t even know how to disarm it, and he’s a physicist, who plays with nuclear radiation for fun.
im going out on a limb……..call me presumptious but……..won’t the bomb dissappear into another dimension.iant that the only way on this show to deal with this situation……i mean what are the odds.if a cabin can dissappear and reappear ,i’ve no doubt the lost makers can make this bomb reappear over hiroshima when its supposed to..or maybe dan will fix it!(huh),after all he’s fixed absolutely nothing since he’s been there,so yeah they will all rely on desperate dan….if anyone can solve this problem it will be sayid….he can fix anything…
the bomb is not encased in concrete….the electromagnetic energy is what they encased in concrete
brother_des, this is a great question!
When I researched H-bombs, for a theory I wrote on Jughead, I came upon an interesting fact. You may wish to give it a read. It’s entitled, Is it safe….the bomb that is.
Anyway, just going on my faulty memory, but, H-bombs when combined with electromagnetic energy create severe consequences.
Depending on where ‘the others’ buried the bomb, another explosion could then cause Jughead to explode.
Technically and scientifically, I don’t know how this all works, but feel certain the writers will come up with a logical explanation for us, that is believable.
Good thoughts!

hydrogen bombs are set off by an internal atomic bomb. you need a high level of energy in a chain reaction to start the chain reaction necessary for an h bomb. it can still be dangerous otherwise though
I don’t think it will be dangerous in the sense that it will cause a huge explosion that will successfully destroy the source of the electromagnetic energy on the island and avert the incident. The radiation will be very dangerous, sure… but I don’t think you can detonate jughead they way they will need to by hitting it with a rock.
I’m new today so be kind. Did Dan not tell Richard that he was the one that brought the h bomb to the island? When did he do this? Is it what is in the mystery box from the 316 crash?
H-bomb, A-bomb, Nuke, they are all fundamentally the same type of weapon. Different configurations, safety mechanisms and short falls but the same. The hydrogen isotopes used in the H-bomb give it is name!
My concern is for a largely sci-fi show (sorry but its more sci-fi these days) they need a good way to set the bomb off (or not) without rock slinging and using more black rock dynamite. I guess it
Well, you don’t detonate it hitting it with a rock… I think those things had electronic detonation switches. In some cases those switches were armed into the “crumple zone” at the front of the bomb where it hits the ground but in many cases the switch was controlled by other means, such as remotely with radio signals or internally by a clock or altimeter. The Pacific tests sites all used different variations of bombs, some set off in the air, some on impact, some under the water, some high in the upper atmosphere… which is why many of the islands in the Bikini Atoll will have to be permanently closed… you can live on one of these islands for decades with no effects, but the minute you start growing food and eating it, the rads build up and kill you.
Right, my point is that Jack isn’t likely to have the know-how to detonate the hydrogen bomb once he finds it.
Doesn’t a H bomb ignite the atmosphere? if this is so then its even more dangerous as the island is in a bubble, with little or nowhere for the radiation to dissapate.
Another thing, what about the EMP given off it would wreck all sorts of equipment unless they are suitably protected
The type of bomb they have there was tested by dropping it off a platform (kind of like the one it was on when Daniel told them to bury it, only taller)…
I don’t think the H-bomb ignites the atmosphere. This is an implosive device. An atomic detonation causes the compression of the secondary feul to a critical state which then explodes. While there were concerns before the first tests that nuclear bombs would cause an uncontrollable reaction with oxygen and hydrogen in the atmosphere, this is clearly not the case. What is the case is that the detonation of a nuclear device on an island of this size would kill every single living thing in proximity. As far as instruments go… I’m betting that the DHARMA hatches are all shielded to prevent local magnetic interference with their machinery anyway. So would it be possible to safely detonate Jughead and have most of the people survive and in hatches? Certainly. Is it likely to happen given what we know already know about the recent future? (the purge, the construction of the button, the arrival of Rousseau, the survival of the Others, the presence of healthy plant and animal life all over the island, “Marvin Candle”‘s videos, etc etc etc). Is it possible that Radzinsky locked himself away in the Swan thinking that a bomb had been detonated and went crazy following the charade of pretending for all those years? Sure!
Could i be correct though in saying that the effects would be magnified immensely as the island is in a bubble of sorts? or would the effects reach to the ‘outside world’?
Maybe yes, maybe no? If you shake up a bottle of coke, there is no explosion because the gases have nowhere to expand. As soon as there is a hole in the bottle, it’s a mess. I mean, this is some pretty bizarre stuff and we really don’t even know much about the physics of the island, and the one guy who seemed to just got shot in the back, so we may never really know!
