Locke being someone else all along?

Remeber in the pilot when Locke encountered something that startled him. We didn’t see what it was becuase we were the “eyes” of this thing. however, it would be fair to say that it was the smoke monster.
My husband also thought the same thing about Locke after he saw the smoke monster (if that is what he saw). There just has to be something up with Locke from the beginning – especially given the fact that he was able to walk after crashing there.
