The Garden of Eden

Written on 14th May 2009

There seem to be a lot of similarities to the classic Garden of Eden story. Regardless of what others think, Jacob and his “nemesis” appear to be an awful lot like Gods. I would go so far as to agree with the God/Satan story. At the beginning of the last episode where we’re introduced to Jacob, the Blackrock is close to the island. Jacob is accused of bringing them to the island. This is where we learn about some of the disdain his counterpart has for him, and how he can’t kill Jacob.
In the bible stories, Satan can take any form and meddles with the “choice” of man. So all of the Jacob scenes we saw “off-island” were the Jacob’s nemesis pushing the Losties toward his goal of either killing Jacob or ruining the current state of the island… they all appeared to be acts of negative reinforcement.
The reason Jacob isn’t concerned with Ben is because he should have died. It was Kate who convinced Richard to save him. Richard took him to the temple, NOT to Jacob. Jacob didn’t make him that way, someone else did and the “sold his soul” theory seems a little clearer.
There’s also the “Adam and Eve” comment from season 1 that adds a little bit of credence.
It doesn’t have to be an exact match… I mean, what makes for a good novel if not a twist on some story that we can all relate to and accept? The “Lost book club” has a lot of those. Plus in the final seasons, it seems like all of the time travel shows have got to lean a bit on the God theory. Look at Quantum Leap for example.
I don’t know how the hieroglyphs work into the equation yet, so I guess it’s a little half-cooked.
