Question: Was Locke really supposed to be the Leader or…?
Written on 15th May 2009
We all wondered how “Locke” new just where he would be when he was shot! It appeared that he sent Richard to tell him a very important message “Bring them all back…you’ll have to die btw”.
Now we know that it was “Evil Twin Locke” that actually told Richard to tell the real Locke this. Was this the Rival’s master plan? To ensure that Locke would kill himself so that he could inhabit his body and then come back and then make sure in his new “Locke costume” that he told Richard to tell the real Locke…? Wasn’t it also “Evil Twin Locke” that marched into the OTHERS camp in 1956 and gave Richard the compass and said “BTW, i’m your new future leader, but you don’t know that yet, cuz i was just born, but here is this special compass so you’ll recognize me later” ?? So does that mean the Locke was never really ‘chosen” to be leader, but the “Evil Twin dude” actually set this all up so that Locke would be the leader – so that HE could then convince Richard to tell the real Locke that he would HAVE TO DIE in order to save the island/do his leader duties? Because the real Locke would ONLY have trusted this “your gonna have to die” advice coming from RICHARD!
My other idea is that CHRISTIAN was also the “Rival”. The Rival also took his body and tried to do manipulations but then he moved on to the “Locke” idea after watching island dynamics play out with Ben. That means it was the Rival who told Locke to move the island, not Jacob. I think this because Ilana said that “someone else has been using the cabin” and it wasn’t someone on Jacob’s team. That was definitely Christian. Smokey could also be the Rival and the Rival could have changed into Alex specifically to get Ben to behave and not monkey stuff up for “Evil Twin Locke”. The stern threat certainly laid the foundation for Ben accepting that he HAD TO DO what Ben said.
This means that Locke wasn’t hiding from Smokey but that he morphed into Smokey or at least morphed into Alex.

burningstar, this is a great question! In order to answer if Locke was ever really meant to be the leader of ‘the others’, you have to look at all of the previous happenings.Just off the top of my head I would say that Locke was intended to be the leader.
This all changed when the Fake Locke aka Jacob’s Nemesis, was instrumental in having Richard relay this information to John Locke when he was flashing.
I am not sure if the smoke monster and Jacob’s Nemesis are in fact the same.
i like your sentiments about the compass and locke setting things up to become the leader.
i dont think the locke we see now is evil or new. its the same locke, regardless of one being dead. ive conviced myself that there is doubles. and the reason for lockes new demeanor is hes so focused on getting what he wants. look back, hes been messed about alot on the island, hell do anything to achieve it. but in my opinon, he has knows the loop hole that was talked about, which i believe well find out what it is in the next season!
and rember, john was the only person jacob went to extremes with in his selection process. he seemed to awaken him, he needed to tell him something. perhaps lock rmeberes??
yes rambling. good thoughts!

I actually don’t think Locke was meant to be the leader because of what Richard said to Jack about ‘I saw him several times and he never seemed special to me’ (something close to that). That little conversation seems like it had some significance, maybe to reveal that Locke was really just used by the Nemesis for his purposes etc.
I’ve always thought something was odd about Locke being the leader. He always felt drawn to the island, saying he was talking to the island and that he was destined to be there or whatever.
What did he mean by ‘the island told me’? Was this some form of the Nemesis communicating with Locke in preparation to take his identity or something?! eeek!
Good question, katelinus. Do we know who it was that that hissed “Help me!” to Locke in Jacob’s cabin? I guess we know now that someone else than Jacob has used the cabin. Could it have been the Rival rather than Jacob that talked to Locke in the cabin? It seems more and more that Locke was never supposed to be the Leader.
