Ben and Juliette Cannot Interfere! – Episode5
Ever since Ben made this strange statement to Jack, (‘No, Jack, I want you, to want to help me’, ‘No, I need you, to want to help me’), I have suspected something else was at play.
Ben needs Jack to do the surgery and remove his tumour. Had Ben wanted to force Jack into it, he could have easily done so. He simply could have killed Kate or Sawyer, or even hold a gun to Jack’s head. Yes, Jack was stubborn, but Ben could have forced him into it easily. Or, better yet, why not lie to Jack straight out and tell him he could leave ‘the island’ immediately. Ben didn’t do this, because Ben can’t interfere! Because it’s against the rules!
Ben had Juliette to assist him in his manipulation of Jack. I think we have forgotten for the most part, how evil we all saw Juliette, initially. I am suggesting that Juliette is Ben’s equal in every sense of the word. Juliette, has been much more subtle than Ben, in her deception. This makes her much more dangerous in my opinion. The demure, sweet, affable, loving, caring Juliette is not who we think she is, after all.
Juliette woke up in the jungle handcuffed to Kate. We know this was pre-planned on the part of both Juliette and Ben. Juliette was meant to infiltrate the camp, and carry out her mission. I’d say she did this exceptionally well, fooling us all, and has remained true to form.
You will also recall Juliette’s statement to Ben when she was tracking the women to see if they were pregnant. Which was, ‘I don’t know, after all we have already put them through’.
I am proposing that Ben has always known what was going to happen, all the way down the line. Something went terribly wrong in the past, and he needs ‘our losties’ to follow the script, to right that wrong. With one, very noteable exception! He must not interfere! Free will of ‘the losties’ must be adhered to. It’s part of the ‘rules’.
It is no accident Ben left ‘the island’ instead of Locke. Christian Sheppard clarified this for us, when he tells Locke, ‘I told you to move ‘the island’ John, not Ben’! Ben needed to manipulate things on the outside world, to effectively return the ’06’, and take care of a little business as well! John Locke gets used again, by the ‘Master Benipulator’. Only this time, he dies!
Juliette needed to be with the remaining members on ‘the island’ (not ‘the others’) to ensure they make all of the right moves through the ‘time shifts’. Ensuring nothing goes wrong, and all goes as planned. Manipulating them along, yet not interfering. Note, how Juliette is so calm and confidant when she tells Sawyer, ‘Locke isn’t down there’, during the last time shift. It’s not the first time we have seen her do this, and how would she know? Watch out Sawyer! You’re Juliette’s next pawn!
Ben has a plan alright, and Juliette knows full well what that plan is, because she’s part of it! But, both Ben & Juliette must adhere to the rules. No interference. Free will of ‘the losties’ is a must. And, there you have it! A little ‘Benipulation’ goes a long way!
Chess anyone?

to take it a step further, i dont think Ben can physically, at least, do ANYTHING. We have never seen him physically, hurt, kill, touch with meaning or affection, i have said a a long time ago, that Bens manipulation is motivated through the fact he cannot actually do anything himself. HE NEEDS OTHERS FOR HELP. NICE POST dabsi
Very interesting stuff. I am still hanging on to the belief that the Others really are the good guys. Whether they follow the rules because of this or because it is impossible not to follow the rules I don’t know but that’s what I think.
AES, you have that right. The post is to emphasize that Ben cannot interfere with the process. It has to be left up to the ‘Free Will’ of ‘the losties’.
Mrs.Sawyer, I specifically didn’t say what the long term agenda of Ben and ‘the others’ is, because I too, am still holding out hopes, they are the ‘good guys’, they claim to be.
The point I am getting at is, even if they are good, they KNOW what the rules are, and even if it causes ‘the losties’ some pain, suffering and even death, they are prepared to stand by and allow these things to happen.
Call it the ‘greater good’ or the ends justify the means. Either way, it displays how cold and calculating they are, to achieve the desired outcome.
These are good thoughts. Maybe a little supporting evidence would be the “mark” that Juliet received as alternate punishment.
We all know that the “Judge” or “sheriff” of the Others was a facade, since Ben is the mastermind in control. So we know that Juliet receiving the mark was upon his orders, under his jurisdiction.
This mark would obviously travel with her, no matter what her location in time. It’s her own ‘compass’ in a sense.
In regard to the Others being the good guys. I just don’t think there is really a set of good guys on this show. Unless we are talking about Hurley. I think Sawyer has a ‘good guy’ heart, just not a good guy past, and not always a ‘good guy’ way of pointing a gun at people. 🙂
kimberly, great thoughts about the mark on Juliette! I always thought that situation seemed a bit contrived.
It could very well be ‘her compass’.
Good thought on ‘the others’. I have a difficult time wrapping around my brain, that old Widmore has any inherent good in him.
Even if Ben is on the side of good, he has his own agenda, which makes me very skeptical about him.
That’s what is so great about this story. Just when you think you’ve figured out who is good and who is bad, you get all turned around again.
AES, I just wanted to expand on your comment. Given that Ben can’t interfere with ‘the losties’, this would explain why he has had to practice the art of manipulation so well.
He has no other choice! I can always rely on your ‘sharp’ eye to catch the details!
Didn’t Ben kick a little Arab butt with his jimmy club. Anyway, On the money Dabs I think Juliet was at some point put in a corner and flipped and now is somehow trying to gain some type of freedom from Ben.
lol OT, He sure did!
I’m anxious to see what Juliette’s motivations are. I’d love to see her and Ben get into a physical smack down!
Trust me, I won’t be taking my eyes off of Juliette again!
Hmm, he did didnt he, it could be an on island thing, and all bets (or rules) are off when he left the island or Alex died, good catch, forgot about that. Great scene, didnt see that coming.
I don’t think it deters from your statements, AES.
Ben is at a point, where he is going to have to use any available method to get them on board, with ‘the plan’.
I do believe so, just bothers me that i forgot about that
lol You’re allowed! My mind was going over so many scenarios when that scene took place, it was an after thought, almost.
I should have paid more attention myself.
