a response to “Holding the Leash of Cerberus and Soul Control”

hello all. this is kind of a response or continuation to the post “Holding the Leash of Cerberus and Soul Control
Posted by Achalli in Theories on 05 31st, 2009”. (im new on the site and im not sure about protocol here. i tried writing a comment but i turned out to be too long, so i decided to start a new thread. if thats not the way things are done, please bear with me).

i will have to agree that the Adversary and the Monster are not the same thing, and serve different purposes.
lets say the island is an entity, like some sort of sentient being (which i think most of us already agree on). i do believe the Monster does its bidding. i read somewhere (and damn it, i cant remember where) after seeing the heiroglyphics in the Monster’s lair that Ben goes down into that Anubis is the god of the dead and the Monster represents some other thing that judges the souls of the dead (i dont remember exactly what it said, and im no expert on egyptian mythology).
this seems to be correct, and it has been touched on many times, but after “The Incident”,what we all have to figure out (assuming this theory) is which manifestations were the Monster and which were the Adversary.

So far as the notion that the Monster is a “judge” goes, we can verify this consistently by one such manifestation- Yemi. Yemi was the only one that tried to make Eko repent for his sins, and when he (rather arrogantly) says that he feels no remorse, Monster deems him unworthy and kills him.

But the gray area comes with Christian. Is he the Monster/Island or the Adversary? Christian leads Jack to water, he appears off the island to call Jack back, as well as telling Locke to move the Island. The first point seems to claim that Chrisitan is a “good” ghost (calling him that for loack of

  1. chatoxmm, awesome theory!

I completely agree that Jacob’s Nemesis and the smoke monster are in fact two different entities, and have different functions.

The smoke monster did take Walt’s form, when Locke was in the pit, and told him to get up, that he had work to do. Locke subsequently goes of to the Radio Tower, and kills Naomi. That tells me, that the smoke monster was against Widmore’s plan of killing everyone on ‘the island’.

I think it is possible that the smoke monster has taken on the form of others, at times. I personally don’t think Jacob’s Nemesis took on the form of Alex, though.

I completely agree that Christian Shephard is not the work of Jacob’s Nemesis. When you consider all of Christian’s actions, he appears to be more in line with ‘the island’s’ desires.

    Nice work!

  2. Yes indeed, nicely done!
I dont think that MIB and Smokey are the same…and…

I am also a believer that Christian was not MIB.

For a few of my ideas, please see “What about you, What about me?” on page one in the theories section…I have ane great piece of evidence to back that claim involving timing of each character.

    Great thoughts here,

It seems to make sense that the monster was Yemi….comfirmed by the producers, I believe, but I really dont think that he is Christian, and I dont think MIB is Alex…but I do believe that Alex was the monster, and the monster alone.

I dont buy into the monster being MIB for the simple reason that it seems kind of weird that it could take a form for that long, and not have done it previously to accomplish its goals.

As stated, it seems the monster is a judge, and Jacob and MIB are seperate.

I wondered for a while if he would recognize MIB as Anti-Locke, and I think he would for the simple reason that jacob did, and feel the monster has similar powers in that area of expertise.

I did have a straange thought that maybe the whole point of the monster is actually to keep tabs on MIB, and it could be Jacobs “eye on the island”…

Again, great thoughts here, and do check out my theory mentioned earlier, I think you will appreciate some of the ideas I have thrown out in regards to all of these beings.

  3. Chaotixmm, I’m glad that you were able to use my theory as a springboard for your own theory. That’s one of the things I like about this site. Good job. I’m definately in the camp of those who believe that the Adversary (that’s how I refer to MIB) and Smokey are seperate entities. As to the manifestations (or ghosts, visions, ect.) I believe there are several sources and that they have all used the same images to get people to do stuff. My current thinking is that the Smoke Monster, the Island, and to a limited extent Jacob’s Adversary have produced the visions. I believe that the visage of Christian Shepard has been utilized by all three at this point. What leads me to believe this is the first season episode “White Rabbit” (I believe that’s the title) where Jack is chasing a vision of his father around the Island and falls over a cliff. It always struck me odd that the Island wanted Jack to help and then try to kill him. After the Season 5 finale I now believe that it was actually the Adversary in the form of Christian and it was his first attempt to gain a body to use to kill Jacob. I believe this scenario is valid for Hurley’s visions of Dave that tried to get him to jump off a cliff (hmm, i smell the makings of a new theory here). Once again Chaotixmm, nice job. I hope to see more from you.

  4. Very interesting work. I am now trying to find the original theory that sparked this work…

FWIW I agree that Smokey and MIB are not the same entity however I’m not sure that MIB truly is the adversary either. Have just posted my own theory to this effect and would be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

I actually think Jacob could be the player behind the visitations. I’m not sure Jacob is a good man at all.

  5. Jacob the badguy???? now thats just scary!! and too much for me to stretch my brain over, im going crazy trying to figure out the rest as it is.

i can relate to u not being sure if MIB is the “adversary”. im not sure hes the bad guy in the conventional sense. think of them as two incarnations or something of god, each with their own view about mankind and their place in the world. WebCommoner has written an awesome theory to this effect. in any case, MIB got Locke killed, and im pissed.
