The blood Ben carries
So in 316 we see Ben call Jack to tell him that he must pick up Locke’s body from Jill in the butcher shop, as he had a little incident. We see blood all over him. Any ideas on whose blood this is? Someone we know, maybe not? I think it is clear, however, that he killed someone, based on the amount of blood, the location of it, and Ben’s “the deed has been done” attitude.
My initial guess of who it is would have to be Penny Widmore. We know that Ben told Charles Widmore that he would kill his daughter earlier in the series. Seeing as Ben is leaving to go back to the island, that would be the perfect time to kill Penny and then flee to where Charles cannot reach him the same day.
Then again it could just be a random. Any other guesses?

I like this theory. I never thought of it that way but I think your on to something.
Absolutely!!!
Think about it. He is near a seaport. And when he says “a little promise to an old friend,” it is probabbly one of those Ben line’s that sounds like bullshit, but is just his way of masking the truth.
Widmore=old friend. Promise=I will kill your daughter. Good thinking.
Ohh good support shanimal, thanks!
My only problem is the cast on his arm. For someone like Ben who always has a plan, you’d think he’d kill her in her sleep or something that is quiet and quick and effective. But all the blood, I guess he still felt dead inside from what happened to Alex so he wanted a bloodbath.
But still, unless Penny has a guard dog, I don’t see her putting his arm in a cast.
My first thought is that it has to be Penny too, if thats the case then yes she certainly put up a fight………..but your capable of a lot when your life is threatened.
I do think that it is possible that it could have been someone else ,I just don’t have any ideas of who…
My initial thought was that someone had beaten Ben. I hate to think that he killed Penny but I suppose that would make sense given his statement to Jack. I would still like to see Des and Pen sail off and be happy with little Charlie.
Maybe Ben had a nose bleed….
I think it’s obvious he went to kill Penny. Whether he succeeded or not is the question.
I think Desmond beat the living s@it out of him while defending her. But as we know Ben can take a beating. If Penny does die, Desmond now has a VERY good reason to return to the island.
I think its Penny as well. I’m also thinking that someone can’t die until the island is done with them. We know the island isn’t done with Desmond (Mrs Hawking said so). Is the island done with Penny? Ben knows that people can’t die until the island is done with them, and Ben always has a plan, so he would acquire a weapon that would allow him to kill someone whether the island is done with them or not. Maybe that weapon was in the package that Ben had in the hotel, and could have created a brutal fight with Penny, Desmond or both. Dan
I fear for Penny and hope Des got there in time to prevent a tragedy. The pattern for the rest of the season is set. An episode on Locke, one for each of the other Oceanic people tracing how they got to the Ajira flight (Hurley was in jail, Kate put Aaron in a safe place, Sayid was arrested, Sun had some unfinished business with Widmore… And Ben met up with Penny and-or Desmond)… Then they will get back to the island and the Dharma Initiative.
AHHHHHH cnt believe i just read that, im in the UK and it wont be aired until sunday. Could we have a spoiler warning please for us non-US folk?
Just a reminder BigDave…don’t come on the site if you don’t want to hear what has happened. There already have been other discussions about this, and it’s the viewers responsibilities to know when things air for you and when to go on a site that will be talking about the episodes. Marking everything as a “Spoiler” to account for all the different time zones doesn’t quite qualify in this case.
Anyway…
It was almost too obvious that Penny is what Ben was after. My thought was that the arm cast gave him a cover up for looking like that as he went to LAX and boarded a plane. The guy looked like it could have been a car crash…easier to “explain” as Ben is oh-so-good at doing.
Kinda like, his “Mother taught me to read” line.
Besides, when he called Jack, there was no apparent arm injury while he used the pay phone.
I’m not convinced that Penny is dead. Once again, dead is so relative on this show.
Great point kimberly on the no cast on the phone, and the cover-up.
I also got a laugh out of the “My mother taught me” seeing as his mom died at child birth.
My favourite line of the episode, however, had to be Lapidus’ “we’re not going to Gaum, are we?” Oh and I was waiting for the show to tell us Frank was the pilot; it was so obvious, I called it the minute Hawking said the 316 flight was the flight.
Great episode for me!
I’m going to go out on a (broken) limb here and suggest that Ben set up Sayid. I think he tried to get him to agree to return to the island and couldn’t. He then asked him to kill someone (who turned out to be Penny) but when Sayid realized who Ben wanted killed he refused and beat the hell out of Ben while Desmond and Penny took off in their boat. Ben planned to have Sayid arrested for murdering Penny and had already arranged for the police to arrive in time to catch him so he could be deported onto flight 316. The cops get there see Sayid tuning up Ben and arrest him. Ben calls Jack. Sayid is processed. Desmond, Penny and Charlie sail off. Desmond and Penny eventually end up back on the island (as Adam and Eve).
Like I said it’s a broken limb, but I sort of like it!
