Desmond, The Button and The Crash
Have been re-watching series 2 and in the finale it is revealed that when he was late to push the button, resulting in system failure, the date was Seprember 22, 2004…the date of the crash. Obviously, when the electromagnetic charge around the island began to dissipate it allowed the plane to enter its ‘field’. However, I am baffled about all the coincidences, such as Desmond already having met Jack “in another life” (pun intended!) etc.
The show seems to be forgetting about the coincidences that made it so enthrawling in the first place, however I believe this is just temporary, as the writers promised us they would answer every question in the current, and then final series.
AES’s most recent post and dabs’s comments were simply fantastic and raised many questions, but does anybody have any ideas on the whole ‘desmond not pressing button caused plane to crash in the first place’ and how in effect, created the show by causing this?

i feel it will play out. I also think..well…thats a theory for later tonight..sorry, got to wait a few hours..too much to explain now
Hi Thomas5, as for the coincidences, that has never wavered.
Just think about Desmond showing up at the Church, the same time Ben and the others do.
Ben has likely been searching for Penny Widmore for the entire 3 years, he’s been on the outside world. Then, voila Desmond shows up. He is now able to follow Desmond to get his hands on Penny.
Coincidence? I’d say, yes!
Be back later with more thoughts!
Great post!
Desmond meeting with Jack was never explained as more than just a ‘chance’ meeting.
It’s one of the many coincidences that have occurred with ‘the losties’ and extended characters. Some of who we are now finding out are related.
The saying, “don’t mistake coincidence, for fate”, applies here. To the great extent we don’t know what these coincidences are, or if they are fate.
So, when Desmond doesn’t enter the numbers in time, and flight #815 crashes, was it coincidence or fate?
I think we have seen the results, that either all of these occurrences are one huge collection of coincidences, or fate brought them all together.
I wish I could define the actual words, so they apply meaning here. lol
I am re-watching season two as well, with a friend who has never seen Lost before. We started with Season One naturally and have progressed to season two nicely.
I feel nostalgic watching the old episodes, and trying hard not to say things that reveal anything. It is hard not to point out anagrams and the like, or mention my admiration for the depth of Ben’s character when he first appears.
I think you make great points as always dabiatchishere, and you did a fine job of expressing them so no worries.
Ha, told you Id get back, see I dont forget. Just got sidetracked writing about 5 theories of my own. (ive never posted this much before)
On to your question. I think there is a way that the story is being told, that is already sort of backwards. The way we found out about Des reliving his life way back in “Flashes before your Eyes”, would have given us a better understanding if we would have seen it first, to the rest of the show.
I know, it didnt happen until he turned the key, didnt it?
I think about when he saw Charlie playing guitar outside, “wonderwall” perfect song choice. I think about how Des said he saw Charlie and knew how it was going too rain, much like Locke knew it was going to rain on island, but with a different understanding I think, as to how he knew.
I think about then Charlie, in “greatest hits”, playing “wonderwall” outside again. I think about it starting to rain, him packing up his things and walking home, or whereever he was going. I think about him saving a woman from being mugged, Nadia maybe, and another possible character connection.
I think about all this and wonder, ” Which is the actual way this scene played out?”
Did Desmond going back and speaking to Charlie, somehow have a butterfly effect on the universe? If Des wouldnt have spoken to him, would he, or did he, still stop the mugging? And if it did not, could it have possibly saved Charlie from drugs and even prevented him from sometime in the future, stepping on 815? Or even if it would have prevented him from being in the bathroom when everything started and sitting in a seat that wasnt his, thus saving his life.
Its little things like this that make me analyze every detail of the show, not always looking for an answer, but just to gain a different perspective. Each character has theirs, and we have ours, making more possibilities to become available. Possibly even if other ones prove different. It seems there are some paradoxal situations on Lost. Some that could mean nothing for the world, but mean the world for the character.
I think Des is the opposite, he is special. And with that, he has the ability to effect the world, but no matter what poor Des tried, he still ended up on the island.
Im not sure if this is helpful or confusing, but either way, I didnt forget about your question and felt its a very simple and important one. But the answer is VERY complicated. We may need Faraday to explain this one :]
AES, I don’t think Faraday could have explained near as well as you just did!
Looking at Lost with these perspectives in mind, puts us along the right track, IMO.
We do not know what flashes occurred first, and how the writers were presenting them to us.
I think any paradoxes which occur will apply to the characters.
Nice explanation!
thanks guys!
