Ultimate theories based upon ‘316’
How it was compiled:
Before I write these theories, I am going to say that I will not give every reason for why I currently believe in these, to make sure the thread is not too long winded. The reasons are rooted in the storyline and character profiles of the show (obviously) but also the direction itself, for instance is Faraday’s mother likely to be a liar, would this make productive sense to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats in future?
Here are my theories:
HUGO: Hugo bought up those seats in the plane in order to minimise the loss of human life on the island or through 316’s crash (for those who’s purpose were not to be there) and also to recreate the conditions of the original 815 as much as possible.
BEN’S INTENTIONS: At 00:48 Ben exclaimed that IF HE COULD RETURN everyone would have to come with him. This shows Ben is gathering everyone together to come to the island perhaps for his own good, he is a selfish character and wants to return to the island. It may not be the 5’s fate to go there.
I believe the analogy of Thomas and Jesus was actually BEN BEING JESUS rather than Locke, and Jack not believing in his Father’s resurrection. I believe Jack’s father has been resurrected somehow. This is because BEN will need the 5 to fight for him when he returns, because he will not be welcomed.
It would make storyline sense if Ben tried to kill either the Butcher (tying up the loose end, may relate to the hangmans noose of Locke) and also all knowledge of Locke’s death being related to Ben. Another possibility is Penny and her Child or Widmore even in order to make sure he stopped searching for the Island and Desmond has nothing to go back to. However I don’t think Ben cares if Desmond goes back or not because he is not part of the Oceanic 6. These are just some of the possibilities to consider.
WHERE THEY ARE AT THE END: Faraday’s mother said they could predict where the island would be at a point in time. I believe due to the concept Lost has had that fate always leads to the same end, there are many linear timelines all starting from the same point, branching out and at points being parrelel and all ending at the same point, much like a diamond shape. The conditions of the 815 may not have been recreated fully, the Lostees may have been vortexed into an ‘unpredictable’ result based upon Faraday’s mothers comments, and therefore be back in the 50s, based upon the state of the van and the MG42 submachine gun of Jin. This may be an alternate reality or the same timeline we have always been on. If it is an alternate reality, Jin who may be born on the island may have never ventured off it and therefore would not know the Lostees. If it is on the same line, when the wheel was unjammed, Jin was stuck back in the 50s, because the wheel only affects the time of the lostees rather than the island.
LOCATION OF THE ISLAND:

I like the idea that Faraday was the one who came up with the equations and the idea that they can predict where and when the island will be at a certain time. It certainly makes a lot of sense if they are now back in time. I’m thinking they’re in the 70s as Jin was wearing a Dharma suit and driving a Dharma van.
I don’t think your take on Ben will play out, I do agree with the Faraday part.
Let me say one more time this is great site, so much food for thought, I love reading it.
Sorry by the 50s I meant to say the 70s.
The obvious ‘clever fellow’ to have built the Lamppost station device would be Enzo Valenzeti… He’s already on the Dharma payroll in the 1970’s isn’t he?
Certainly plausible, but so is Faraday.
