The Importance of the Name Game
I don’t know if anyone has disucssed this concept at length or not but here goes.
There are only a few names that everyone deems important enough to discuss (Jacob, Ben, Aaron and Shepard)
But as we all realized a few names are for scientists and philosphers as well
But let me just give you a run down of the meaning of all the first names of our main characters and let’s see if there
is there is any light to be shed.
First we have Jack (which is short for John)-it means “supplanter” in other words -usurper: one who wrongfully
or illegally seizes and holds the place of another (maybe he is the bad guy after all, stealing Locke’s rightful place?),
that’s the Hebrew translation
option #2-the English translation – god is gracious (as in gracious enough to give you a second chance all you can do
is look a gift horse in the mouth?)
Then we have John- (see Jack option #2 but without all the sarcasm)
Next up there’s James aka sawyer – Oddly enough it is a variant of Jacob which also means usurper in Hebrew
(I am starting to think every non-first born, male is a usurper in Hebrew)
Then there is Hugo aka Hurley -It is a variant of Hugh which in Old English meant Heart and mind.
In spanish it means intelligence.
Sayid comes next -it means Master, strange
Miles – mixed messages on this one, it is a variant of Emil which means “eager to please” but on it’s own it might be a
latin derivative meaning “soldier”.
Daniel- In Hebrew it means “God is my judge.”
Aaron- In Hebrew it means “mountain of strength”
Jacob- he who supplants or to track/follow (right on the head with this one)
Benjamin- son of my right hand * side note, in the middle ages this name was given to boys
whose mothers died in child birth.
Jin- tenderness
Richard- In all translation it means, “strong, powerful ruler”
Kate- Pure, clear, virginal (upon first glance, maybe)
Claire- clear/bright
Sun- the Korean translation is “goodness”
Desmond – from South of Munster (it is Gaelic, refering to one the five ancient Irish regions)
Penelope- dream weaver (as in being Desmond’s constant? Holding his provobial s*** together?)
