The Losties are done…but the game plays on

I’ve been thinking about this since the season premier and I’m hoping some of your thoughts could help or disprove my theory. I believe that what we are seeing is NOT the endgame for the island but it is for our Losties. We know that this “game” has been going on for quite some time between Jacob and MIB and that Jacob has brought multiple groups of people in the name of “progress”. Not only is there the metaphorical loop with different groups of people that MIB feels “always ends the same” there’s also the actual loop that some theorize has been happening with our Losties. The theory that some or all of them have been through this before is attributed to Desmond’s flashes and him knowing how Charlie was going to die because he’s been through this before. Whether you believe the losties have been in a loop of their own or you disagree with this notion, there is undeniable evidence that the “game” between Jacob and MIB has been played out many times before.

Enough with the preamble, here’s my theory. This final season of Lost is showing us how the Losties are having an affect on Jacob’s progress but that the struggle between Jacob and MIB will continue. My evidence? The timeline we are now seeing off island. Before we had a 1977 timeline with most of the Losties and a 2007 timeline with Sun, Richard, and Flocke but since the bomb went off we have an island timeline of 2007 where the MIB has just killed Jacob and a 2004 timeline in which our characters land in LAX. Throughout the season we will see how their time on the island ends and yet, at the same time, see how their lives have carried on back in 2004 when their plane never crashes and they are allowed to carry on with their lives. I think many times when a series ends people wonder what happened to the characters in their future (which is why we get lame spinoffs from time to time) and this is the writers’ way of telling us what happens to the characters when their time with the island is done.

As far as the war between Jacob and MIB not being done, I don’t have conclusive evidence but I theorize that because the island events are taking place in 2007 and we see the losties land in 2004. I believe they were sent back to carry on with their lives while the war rages on where as if they ended the war they would still be in a 2007 timeline. Also, if the war has been going on for this long, should we really be that shocked if it continues after our losties return home? So again, I believe this season we are going to see how the Losties impact the process of the island and how their lives are carried out (to some degree) when they are no longer the pawns in a “game”. That’s my theory, I’d love to hear everyone elses thoughts and I apologize if this theory has already been mentioned but I haven’t had time to read through all of the new theories posted recently.

  1. This also raises the question about whether someone can die on the island and still go on living off the island (or vice versa). If they have to sacrifice themselves for some prupose on the isalnd, is there a way they carry on off it? How does it course correct if they die on the island in 2007 but are on a timeline in 2004 where they never went to the island? What the?
