Hansoandhisbeard, I think Daniel Faraday does hold some kind of key to unlocking the past, although maybe not dating back to its ancient past.
I think the missing foot in the picture is meant to bring attention to the fact, that Faraday does hold the key to unlocking the past and many of its mysteries.
