John 3:16 (or, should I say John Locke 3:16?)
Again turning to the biblical references or influences in the Lost stories for some idea of what the writers are going on about or doing I look at the numbers on the flight. Obviously we know numbers, names, and hidden messages are are cleverly worked into the show and often have more than one meaning.
In this case I believe strongly that Flight 316 was selected because of the passage in the bible John 316, which specifically reads:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”.
I further feel this points to Locke definitely resurrecting upon returning to the island, and that he might return in a form/role similar to that of Christian.
Thoughts?

I like the “people who believe him have eternal life” as it seems that the right choice aka the choice to life was to follow Locke and not Jack.
Very interesting. Until reading what you said I had not thought about Richard Alpert who certainly believes and appears to have eternal life. Maybe it is just because he is time traveling, or maybe he is ageless. Hmm more food for thought.
… And Locke’s suicide note: ‘I wish you had believed…’
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son” – would this not relate to Jack – John’s actions have a lot of the time throughout the seasons been aimed at converting Jack to his way of thinking, and to keep him on th island. He has tried his best to keep him there and when he left tried to death to get him to come back. Maybe John’s sacrfice as per Christians words in the last show is to ensure Jack gets to the island has he is needed and should never have left -it would tie into a lot of the the theories about Christian being more important to the island than we ahve previously seen!
I am just curious about the modality of “return”….fountain of youth? Holy Grail?
Good points all. They said Locke was going to be serving as a proxy, maybe he was serving as more than just a proxy for Jack in terms of “just a corpse” and maybe he was filling the role of “surrogate” father figure. He had of course been TRYING to teach, guide, and sway Jack throughout the show to his way of thinking. Much like his father. I just thinking the name John can not be removed from the the choice 316 and still have it work out as neatly. Again just a theory though.
John’s dying can be tied to Christ dying so that people will believe. I think Jack is the referred Thomas, who needed the “proof” of the miracle, whereas gaining the notoriety of a doubter. John wishes Jack believed, perhaps so he wouldn’t have had to die to bring him back or bring him to his point of view.
Thorn, very nice read! I really like how you worked in so many cool elements.
I think of ‘the island’ and ‘the losties’ in terms of the three R’s.
Redemption of ones self
Resurrection of ones self
Re-incarnation of ones self
Interesting Kitty, I think if Locke returns to Life there will definitely not be a single doubter left on the island.
Much thanks again dabiatchishere, and I love the three R idea I really find that to be brilliant and very much spot on.
one thing ive always found interesting(good post btw) is Christians name ie Christ and he was ressurected when he came to the island not sure the relevence but i know names in lost seem to have some deeper meaning…
I heard something extremely interesting today on the national geographic channel explaining a theory in physics that if one were to travel on a spaceship at 99.9% the speed of light (they said it is impossible to travel at 100% the speed of light) for 20 years and come back to Earth the travelers would have only aged the twenty years yet the earth would be unrecognizable to them and have aged thousands of years. The main point was trying to prove if everlasting life is possible, and this was the most realistic answer. What does all this mean? Prolly nothin’, but it did grab my attention; and it made me think of Alpert.
Hi Thorn
Also from the Bible
Romans 8:15
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father”.
Those flight numbers are there for a reason
Excellent catch! I think the big significance of this is that it serves to highlight Jack’s doubts. In my opinion it is almost like a direct challenge to Jack. ‘Believe.’
Very interesting, and I agree the numbers certainly hold meaning. The writers and creators of this show are brilliant in my opinion i love how everything is so layered, steeped in mystery, and hard to pick up on. Yet at the same time some of it is right before your eyes. The best is being part of a community like this where some people see some things, you see others and can compare notes.
