Polar Bears:

In the previous episode, lefluer, there are 2 dharma guys at the start, Gerry and Phil i think. I don’t know which one is which but one of them says to the other, as a bit of a throw away comment, something along the lines of “next you’ll be telling me the polar bears will escape”.

do you think that the writers etc believe this will satisfy the whole polar bear issue?

I hope not, there is no mystery in that. When we first saw the polar bear, it was like “oh my god, what’s a polar bear doing in the jungle?” and about the same time, kate saw a horse, and it was all very mysterious.

But this brings me to a second point: is the show a victim of it’s own success and the skill of the writers? i mean, the show has been so good, and still is, and it makes me think, is any explanation going to satisfy us??

  1. My guess (just a guess) is that the writers are just indicating that
    a) The polar bears are already a joke even to the dharma people working on the island. I mean come on, POLAR BEARS!
    and that
    b) The hydra station on Alcatraz is already up and running in 1977. Maybe the bears have just been shipped over and Phil and Gerry can’t yet wrap their mind around the concept, so they make jokes about it.

  2. I’m not sure how much mystery there’s going to be about the polar bears. It was huge in season one because OH MY GOD! THE ISLAND HAD A GROUP OF HIPPY SCIENTIST DOING SILLY EXPERIEMENTS ON IT!?!!?

Now that we know about the DHARMA Initiative the polar bears aren’t all that surprising anymore.

Kate’s horse was the smoke monster. I think the writers confirmed that at some point.

  3. I did read something the other day about the polar bears (well, the one found in Tunisia) that seemed somewhat plausible.
Maybe Dharma had them there just to do experiments on, simple as that, no mystery. The one in Tunisia however, is strange. Instead of, like it has been theorized many times before, Dharma using the polar bears to do experiments on the FDW, maybe one of the losties, or more likely Daniel, come up with the idea to have a polar bear turn the wheel in an effort to get them from 1977 to 2008, with the rest of everyone.

  4. Highbrow is correct on the horse being the smoke monster.

And I agree with Andre’s stuff about the DHARMA joke.

As for the OP, the Polar Bear was seen in Pilot Part 2, and Kate’s horse was seen in season 2, so definately not around the same time were they seen.

And the show is not a victim of it’s success in my opinion. The writers had the idea for the end of the show very early on, if I recall correctly, and while not everyone will be impressed (it would be awesome if everyone was though), enough people will be satisfied, including most of the dedicated theorists – the people who go further than just watching each episode.

  5. cappayne, I hear what you’re saying. To be honest i’m enjoying season 5 more than any other season ohter than season 1, but i can’t help but think that there can’t be any smarter way of explaining the show better than what some people already have done on here. I mean, some of the theories on here blow me away to the point wehre i think “that will happen, and if not, it’s better than what will hapen”

Tell you what though, i can’t wait to be proven wrong!
