how many others are there?

Hello all. This is my first post, but i have followed the site regularly. I’m curious to see what the community feels in regards to how many others exist. 20? 50? 100? My guess is that there are about 30 or so others, but i feel like there could be more. After reading the posts on this site, i’m certain you guys pay much more attention to detail than i do, so i would appreciate your guesses as well. i’m also curious as to how the others maintain the population growth or lack there of. I mean either they can reproduce, or they continue accepting new people into their group (children and adults) that have made their way to the island, or they simply don’t age.

  1. This may be a question that is not answered until the “war” (if in fact it is a battle type scene as we expect, which I have doubts about) if ever. That is one mystery that holds the others on a pedestal above anyone they encounter. You just dont know what you really are encountering. You think you are speaking to one, and the jungle lights up like Penelope Widmore’s christmas tree (sorry, just watched the constant).
Id bet, that if the Dharma would have tried to take action on Alpert last episode, we would have seen a heard of others creep eerily out of the jungle in full battle mode.

  2. According to Lostpedia, there are 40 introduced Others.

Of the 40, 24 are dead, 8 are alive, 1 (Juliet) is expelled, 4 (Ben, Widmore, Jill, Eloise) have been seen off the island recently, 1 (Locke) is defected, and 1 (Widmore’s victim) is unknown.

There are also 40 Others that we see, but have not been introduced to (they are in non-speaking roles).

This brings the total of on-screen ‘existence is known’ Others to 80, although it is certain that there are more.

I would not be surprised if there is a total of 108 Others 😛

  3. 108 ! Seems like a good number (or at least a fated number)

There are Richard’s original ‘hostiles’ and any Dharma survivors that have been brought in by Richard… The survivors of the Black Rock from the 1840’s and any of their descenants.

Then there are the ones living life off-island ‘on assignment’ as Patchy says… Like Jill the butcher and Gabriel, whom she mentions to Ben…

As to how they keep their numbers from depleting…

I think Cindy and the 18 passengers from the tail section have been folded into those numbers as well as stragglers and survivors (suck as but not including Rose and Bernard) from the fuselage.

Then there are the recruits like Juliet who were brought onto the island by Ben…

I am looking foreward to some kind of ceremony in the island’s temple. If you are an OTHER your presence would be mandatory, wouldn’t it ? Jacob would be taking down names of absentees.

  4. Haha. Well the LOSTpedia list had Cindy and Zack and Emma on it, under “Alive”.

I do not think that Gabriel, along with the Others only to be mentioned are on that list however. Great catch Andre. So 81 it is! Although this weeks episode should definitely introduce at least a half dozen more in my opinion.

  5. Cappayne,
It is another South Park reference from Awesomo 2000. It is how much wood a wood chuck would chuck if it could chuck wood. Great episode, you should check it out.
