A Candle, By Any Other Name…
Pierre Chang, Dr. Marvin Candle, Dr. Mark Wickmund and Dr. Edgar Halliwax. What the heck is that guy’s real name?
I guess it’s Pierre since we’ve heard people actually calling him that instead of just hearing it in the orientation videos… My question is what is the point of using the different names? I had originally thought that maybe the people who saw the video didn’t know who he was and didn’t see the other videos but in Namaste we saw that he sometimes personally in-processes new DHARMA recruits! He must be pretty well known around DHARMAVille as Pierre Chang. What do you suppose people thought when they saw Pierre in a video introduce himself as someone else?
Wouldn’t the new guy at the Swan, for example, show up for duty, sit down to watch the orientation film, then say “what the heck? That’s Pierre Chang!
Is there some clue implied by his name? Wax, candle, wick… What gives? There has to be some explaination for this…

The various “candle” names were discussed way back, and there were some good theories on his namesakes, but unfortunately I can’t recall them at the moment.

Another thing… Did Jack never see the Swan orientation film?
Yes, he did… he watched it in Orientation the same time John Locke watched it for the first time…

I’d also now like to know why he uses aliases when DHARMA employees see the video. Maybe he fears that the ‘hostiles’ could come across videos and he doesn’t want his name out there.
Here’s what I think… This popped into my head now after I posted this question…
Remember when we saw that video of Pierre and someone else (maybe Daniel) making a video message to the future? Then the guy, possibly Daniel says “this is never going to work” or something like that and they apparently give up? Maybe Pierre decided to use those different names as a message to people in the future.

Highbrow – that is definitely an interesting twist on the names. I was bothered by him doing ‘intake’ too, knowing that he uses aliases.
My only other thought is that it goes back to the idea that the names could actually hold significance to what is happening in each station. I feel like that would be too complicated for some reason, so I like the idea that it could be an alias for future island residents.
It has obviously thrown us off, so there has to be something like that for the Losties now.
Yeah, in the video where he’s trying to make a message for people in the future he proves that he has knowledge of the future. He had to get that from someone… probably Daniel (if that was him behind the camera… I think it was). If it was Daniel or any of the other Losties really, they could have told him that they knew about those orientation films and that sneaky bastard put a message in there.
No idea what it means though..
When was this video that he was making for the future?
Also, this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen secret messages.
Let us not forget “Tell my sister I love her” and (up to speculation) “We want 3.25 million dollars”
Hey highbrow, good thought here. I was thinking that his names changed because they changed the past and everytime the past changed….gotcha! lol
…Im joking. I was thinking the same thing actually, since Dan was possibly the camera man. Lost is good for making someones voice sound like someone elses for a ruse. Remember the shower scene with Kate? I think for just a split second, we were supposed to think it was Juliet, that Jack was off island with and not Kate, in season 4.
I think maybe Dan was possibly sending a message about light, candles, or possibly that there is a major clue to the whole timtravel aspect, in the “flame” station. Good thoughts here. The only thing I dont get is why different names, why noxt just one hidden meaning name, why several different names? Its a good question, I thought was possibly going to be answered in “namaste” given the name of the episode was a word we first here from Changs mout in a video.
Cappayne, the vid refered to I believe is the ‘orchid’ comic-con video, which is different from the other orchid video that Locke saw. You can hear a voice that sounds very much like Daniels.
The only videos we see that are complete are the Swan and Pearl videos.
Both are behavioral research stations (in all probability). In both cases the personel would be highly paranoid (just look at Radzinski) and have a background in security (Kelvin Inman).
Just a thought but maybe the secrecy surrounding the stations would include bringing people in in the middle of the night, bypassing the welcome center and with a secret briefing. In which case they would not meet Pierre Chang and assume he is Hallowax or whatever.
The same could apply to Arrow in which workers would get a nice little suicide pill in case of capture by the hostiles.
The Orchid video starts with Chang apologizing for having workers lie to their friends and family. Not the most trustworthy setup for the truth.
Hey great post Highbrow, can i just add to this that the airhostess on the oceanic flight, who later joined the others, was naed Cindy Chandler. Chandler means candle maker!!! It’s so discreet but could be interesting.
