Make your own kind of music…
I have been thinking over and over about Desmond….who is he to the island, why is he so important. I have a thought and it brings me back to the episode with Jack and Desmond, the first time that they met. I think that perhaps although Jack was in his present, Desmond was in his future past. If that makes sense. I think Desmond may be the person that was first chosen to trial and error the time machine. Perhaps when he started to be able to “see” future events such Charlie’s death, the people who were testing him started to figure out that he could in a sense, “see” the future and may be a detriment to the whole idea all together, therefore locking him in the Hatch and causing him to push a button every 108 minutes. I think when we see him with Jack on the stairs jogging, he is in fact, in a part of his time travelling. He says to Jack, “See you in another life…” That to me, is very telling that he must have known somehow that he had been there before or that he needed Jack…perhaps he didn’t know at that exact moment but his future/past self did. Does that make sense? I am new to this whole thing but I LOVE theories and I LOVE this show. Please feel free to comment…I love a good debate! Also any thoughts as to the song that Desmond was listening to in the Hatch?…..Could there be any meaning to the words and why he was listening to it? And he tehignored……crash and burn 😉

desmond is a bit of an enigma and will probably be one of the most important characters to the net result of the show. but what we have learned so far is that even if desmond tries to change the past, course correction takes place and eventually the past he tries to change happens the way its suppose to happen. i believe desmond is the “key” in the literal sense just as he was the man to turn the key in the hatch.
username I agree with you. Desmond has shown us most of the “facts” we have about time travel: constants and course correcting.
I do not agree that he was the first human guinea pig for time travel. We have seen a significant amount of his past life, more than many other characters. I do think he has a part to play in the end game, though it may not be a “great” part.
Speaking of which, I also think that Desmond holds a clue about the nature of Penny’s parentage. Both Eloise Hawking and Charles Widmore put Desmond down and point out his flaws as being NOT a great man. Eloise goes so far as to say that the only great thing Desmond will ever do is to push the button. An allusion to the importance of that act, but simltaneously, a put down. I believe that Eloise disapproves of her daughter’s choice in a lover as much as Charles does. Either they are both her parents…. or neither of them are. If Ethan ends up among the Others, and Alex is also taken, then it stands to reason that another child of the Others, Penny, did not originate from them either.
Ok, too many theories in one. I think we will see Desmond again and that he does hold a key. He’s been called a coward all his life- I have a feeling he may end up coming to the rescue.
I agree. Another telling line in that same football stadium scene is when Desmond tells Jack to “raise it up”. It always seemed like he was saying something more important than giving ankle injury advice.
i really like your thoughts sohrshah
as i sift through all the theories and watch the episodes over and over again, i keep returning to desmond as the key. i really believe that the producers need to save the show not just the island. if we can all agree that the show is somewhat about the time loop theory, than the ending in my opinion will be nonchalant.
the real story behind this show is the story of relationships, and we see the dynamics all the time between the cast and crew. for me the most intriguing scene in the whole serious to date has been the scene where desmond turns the fail safe key, flashes through time, and utters the famous words “I love you Penny”.
the relationship between desmond and penny and the inevitable outcome of what
Remember what Eloise told Desmond when he said he was going to marry Penny and they were going to be together forever? . . . she told him that they wouldn’t. She knows this. That’s a clue.
Just because she said he wasn’t, doesn’t make it true. Think of The Oracle in the Matrix. She told them what they needed to hear, not the truth.
One stanza of the song that has small meaning “You’re gonna be knowing
the loneliest kind of lonely.
It may be rough goin’,
just to do your thing’s
the hardest thing to do.”
Gotta love the Mama’s and the Papa’s.
Crash and Burn baby 🙂
Thanks for the comment tehignored…:) Your theories are very good and really spark my thinking about the whole show! 🙂
What do we really know about Desmond? To sum up…
Originally from Scotland. Maybe.
Blank. Studied at the Royal Shakespeare Academy as a scenic artist.
From 1988 to 1994 had a relationship with a girl Ruth which he abruptly cut off weeks before their wedding.
He then entered a monastery for several months and left there to enter a relationship with Penny Widmore which lasted two years.
He broke that off in 1996 and entered the Royal Scots Regiment. Did something wrong (or was framed to keep him away from Penny?) and did some time (un-specified) in prison.
Left jail with a dishonorary discharge and set about (some time later) to train for a sailing race around the world.
In 2001 ends up shipwrecked on an island in the Pacific.
The part that bothers me the most is that we know NOTHING about Desmond prior to 1990. No childhood or family. No real background clues.
For such an important character that is a huge gap that remains un-referenced in the series.
In another post someone suggests that Daniel may have left the sland to go find Desmond. In 1977 this would mean a lot. We wuld finally see a young or baby Des. Or meet his parents.
I am going to go re watch the first episode with Desmond and Jack…more on this later….
I also am usually reading this from work….I liked the thoughts of what to track it as…I think its good as “research” for now! 🙂 I am on the phones all day and when people don’t call…I read this! 🙂
