The “LIST”
Hello everyone,
This is my very 1st theory post. I’ve read many theories in the past 4 or 5 seasons, but have been afraid to post one of my own. But, after watching “Namaste” for the fourth time I realized something. I don’t know if this has been said, and i’m sorry if someone already said this theory, but hear it goes. The list in “3 mins” We see the names of Jack, Kate, Sawyer, & Hurley. For all these seasons we were wondering why were only these names selected from the surviors. Thinking that the “list” were for “good & bad guys”. I don’t think it was for those reasons at all. I believe it’s because

Hi rickofficial, this is a great post, and worthy of being in the ‘theories’ section, IMO.
Great take on the List! I think you may have gotten it right!
I also felt young Ben knew exactly who Sayid was! Almost as if he was ‘challenging’ Sayid, with that look.
I also wonder why Sayid was not on that list. Maybe it had to do with something that happened to DHARMA while Sayid was still in the cell, so he would not have seen what happened.
this is a bad ass post, it’s so simple yet makes so much sense!
best theory i ever read! can’t imagine it being wrong
ive thought along these lines. but the list didnt include sayid, jin, or sun(who is trying to get back there). however, those exact people were on a boat trying to help out the people on the list. maybe its just that they are main characters, but maybe not.
I don’t know where Lapidus fits into all of this then. Maybe he went back to “tend to his passengers” and Sun went alone on her “journey”. Although I would not like this. I would hate to see scenes of only Sun, maybe she goes with other people, or meets people on the way.
It is interesting that you bring this up again rickofficial. That list is often brought up.
Is it just me or is that list often confused with Jacob’s Lists of people?
When the short list is shown to Michael he is a prisoner of the OTHERS when they were still the mysterious baddass ‘Others’ with a capital O.
If you remember back, Ben was a prisoner in the Swan station at that time. This means he really had nothing to do with writing that list.
My guess is a committee of Juliet, Bea and Tom (and possibly Richard who was not yet a twinkle in the writers eye) came up with the list. Jack the spinal surgeon, Kate (to control Jack) and Sawyer to control Kate. Hurley to subsequently be released with a message for the castaways to stay away. Only Hurley could be trusted to be cowed enough to go back without making a fuss.
What seems to confuse a lot of fans is the other lists. The list of tail end passengers who are kidnapped by Ben’s people. There are nine names and descriptions (theoretically provided by Goodwin) of passengers to be taken away. Eko may have been on the list. During a struggle he kills two of the kidnappers. It is not clear whether he is bringing aid to someone else being taken or being taken himself.
There is a list provided by Ethan of the fuselage survivors. Interestingly, nothing comes of that list. No one is kidnapped except Claire.
Andre7, you are right on the numerous lists out there.
I have thought the same thing about the list that Michael gets to bring back the 4. I know he was in the Swan, but whenever he figured out that they were on 815, he was with his people. So that could account for him still having his say in it, in my mind at least.
I think one of the best things about the show is that BOTH reasons could work, especially now that we see the Losties in 1977. But even back when we were led to believe that Jack needed to operate on Ben, Kate/Sawyer was leverage, etc…that still works, too.
It’s just yet another example of a scenario/issue representing the bigger tension and argument about fate/free-will…”Why” do certain things happen and how can they be explained? Multiple angles, multiple reasons, depends on the perspective…right? Same with this List, so far!
And in that last comment about “he” I was implying Ben, sorry about leaving that important detail out!
Good theory
Maybe ben leaves sayid off the list because back in 1977 he kills sayid or sees him die without knowing he is with Jack & Co, afterall Sayid is being treated separately as an other and maybe ben never finds out he is part of jacks group.
Dabs – i think the reason Ben challenges Sayid with his eyes is because Ben has already been recruited by Richard into the others and he knows Sayid is not with them
Kimberly. Good point. Ben may have set up the list and kidnapping before heading off to be captured by Rousseau (deliberately or not)…
Dads and Prospero: The challenging look will hopefully be explained in tomorrow night’s episode.
I am hoping that Ben has the ability to mind-flash the way Desmond does. In which case adult Ben with all his knowledge is walking around in teen Ben’s body. Think of all the damage he can do to Sawyer’s plans…
So far, we’re told there’s no other like Des (and I hope it stays that way), so I don’t think Benny has the ability to mind-flash, Andre. But maybe he could have premonitions, as in foreshadowing dreams or something.
rickofficial, you make a good point, and ekolocation does, too. Everyone who’s time-flashed to the 70’s or is expected (so far) to time-flash and/or has an important role this season – Sun – was related to that “List” in some way.
However, if you think about it, and that’s what’s bothering me, what would the point/significance of that whole Sawyer/Kate/Jack manipulation be if it had something to do with their presence on the island in the 70’s aside from getting Jack to perform surgery on Ben?
The writters could argue that it was all planned, but it could just as well have been made up along the way.
