That would still be changing the past. Remember, everything that Jack, Kate, Sawyer, etc. are doing already happened in their past, and so did the purge. The purge happening is inevitable because it already happened. That is, unless Desmond comes in and does something, maybe. I have no idea of what kind of changes he can actually make or if his conscious only acts independantly from time. Really, that is all we have seen him do so far (suddenly remembering him and Daniel’s conversation years after it happened).
Oh, but your idea about the truce sounds pretty good. Dharma could just show everyone where the island is. I have been trying to figure out what they can actually offer the hostiles, and that sounds pretty plausible.
the truce probably came about because the hostiles knew they would be outnumbered and lose in any type of war against dharma, save from gassing them all.
DHARMA didn’t want anyone to know where the island is, it would interfere with their work.
Widmore’s timeline confuses me ‘cuz he says he was looking for the island for 30 years (1977) and the purge didn’t happen ’till ’92. What we’re leading up to must be how Widmore was tricked rather than the purge.
