This is an awesome question that deserves more attention than it is getting HB.
I agree that it is beyond just odd that the chamber is iced up like that. I had not connected it with the Tempest station. Good speculation on your part.
It couls also be that the previous time the wheel was turned, possibly without being taken off its axis, the destination point was somewhere very cold (where thee are polar bears?) and the door was left open a crack.
Maybe the Dharma people working in the orchid would reach down to chip ice away for their scotches (those who like their McCutcheon on the rocks). 🙂
ok i’m not scientific but bear with me….
Maybe it’s the effect of whatever the exotic material is, like the energy makes it cold. The FDW is right next to the pocket of crazy junk, no? so maybe that produces the coldness, and noone in the DI has to do anything to keep it that way. It just is, and if it wasn’t frozen, then the wheel wouldn’t turn the crazy hands of time.
Since we already “know” (I don’t totally agree but Goodwin seems to think so) that the gas is the killer type as opposed to the freezing type, I doubt the gas serves that purpose.
You both are probably right. Didn’t Radzinsky map have a place marked “Poison”. But, when they were drilling into the room the drill bit melted. So, it is cold enought to melt a drill bit from the friction, but not cold enough to freeze Ben to the floor when he walked in the room? And proximity caused radiation burns. But, really, I do think that you are both right. We are talking about dark matter. Who knows?

Damnit Bailey, that’s what I was going to say!
