The smoke monster is restricted by water
Just a thought/observation. After watching dead is dead and watching Ben drain the small pool of water, I had a thought that maybe water is some sort of boundry or constraint for the smoke monster, and maybe that small pool of water kept the monster at bay. IMO this certainly fits with the idea that the smoke monster could be some sort of electrical “securtity”; and because the island is surrounded by water, the smoke monster can never travel to all other parts of the world. Consider the implications if the smoke monster was capable of engaging a large population, and perform all the strange functions that we’re aware of…so far! And if it can travel over water, why has it not done so thus far? I know this idea is not groundbreaking, but i just found the idea interesting and possibly significant. Any thoughts?

it also blew out ben’s fire. and stays out of certain trees. maybe it doesnt like the elements?
kingmonte, it almost appeared at first, that Ben was opening up a storm drain. It looked really nasty that’s for sure.
Wherever it comes from, it is able to turn into the smoke we see, and come through the cerebrus vents.
It may have its origins in water!
Thank you for both of your comments. It most certainly looked like a storm drain to me, and that seemed so trivial at first, but then made me think that the pool of water had some sort of significance. I still find the idea that since the island is surrounded by water, the smoke monster can never leave. The rest of civilization would change as we know it, if the smoke monster were to visit the rest of us.
its also affected by sound, are there any relations between sound and water?
Not sure. Maybe the sonar fence was designed as a security device against humans only. I mean, maybe the sonar fence doesn’t affect the smoke monster at all. I cannot remember anything specifically that has happened, that has shown the sonar fence dehabilitating anything but the losties. Right? I mean we have been told differently, but what have we seen? The smoke monster was certainly in the DI village when Ben summoned it.
When the moster was chasing Kate and Juliet they ran to the other side of the fence and turned it on. The fence stopped the monster in it’s tracks.
oh. ok. So i was also thinking that if the smoke monster is some sort of spiritual being, or collection of souls, that egyptian mythology suggested that the dead were carried on a boat to the other side, or something to that extent. Therefore, the dead could not travel over water without the help of a vessel. I hope i’m not going too far out on a limb for that one. Makes sense to me.
I felt that is was more symbolic than anything but a barrier would make alot of sense but would stops it from coming out?
We saw those holes in the temple & thats where it would appear to come out of.
An what I mean by symbolic is that it was like Ben was washing his hands full of sin in that water which the Monster probably analysis IDK.
It made me think for some odd reason about that man who sentenced Jesus Christ to crucifixion.
kingmonte, the reason the smoke monster is unable to handle the sonar fence, is because it cannot go over it. It’s origins are from under the ground!
I totally think you are onto something with mythology with the dead being carried to the other side.
There is no doubt, in my mind, that there is water flowing underground.
Reminds me of the Pink Floyd song, ‘Smoke on the Water’, kind of!
Good thoughts!
I also commented in another how it had an electric appearance when it first appeared. It looked like electric current/static electricity with the flashes. I’m not sure… but I’m anxious to find out!
I would love a pink floyd reference in lost. Just the thought makes me happy. I’m with you dabs. My gut feeling is that this idea may be pretty significant to understanding the smoke monster. I hope to incorporate this idea into a larger, more comprehensive theory that i have been working on for ages.
There’s definitely a connection between water and the smoke monster. Ben and locke both left the island and ended up in tunisia, a DESERT of all places, where water is obviously the most scarce resource. The polar bear remains were found there as well. At one point in time, tunisia had an abundance of water (lakes, rivers, and seas) surrounding it…long before it became the arid, dry landscape as we know it today. So if the island was located in tunisia at some point, the smoke monster could possibly have been on an island surrounded by water at that point in time as well. Does this not strike anyone else as curious?
kingmonte, a couple of things I noted with the smoke monster are, could the water underground, meeting with the air, cause a ‘mist’ effect, turning the smoke monster into smokey mist?
The other notation is, how did ‘the others’ initially travel to and from ‘the island’? Dharma had submarines, and they travelled to a different location.
I think there is a lot more to learn and understand about these underwater passageways, and where they might lead to.
Dabs, Dabs, Dabs. I’m disappointed!! Pink Floyd did not record “Smoke on the Water.” Deep Purple recorded it.
Just playing around with you. But, I do take Pink Floyd pretty seriously! Hollar
Smoke on the Water is a song about Frank Zappa burning down the recording studio that Deep Purple was going to record their next album at, so they had to hire the Rolling Stones mobile recording van to record the album. It’s one of those songs that sounds more epic than it is. 😉
I do think it’s an interesting idea that the smoke monster could be restricted by water. But it could be as simple as water just fills up the tunnels that smokey usually travels through and that keeps it at bay.
