What happened with Tom? Leaving the island?
Okay, I know I’m a few seasons behind with this question, but I recently (in an attempt to get my boyfriend hooked on LOST) watched all the past episodes on abc.com of the entire series.
When the hatch exploded at the end of season 2 (i believe it was season 2? sorry if I’m wrong), didn’t that cut off communication with the outside world?

the lampost? but i have a feeling “priveledged” members of the others know a better way to the island
while not really an explanation, ekolocation, thats actually really a good idea that probably some people know ways on and off. Like Richard GOING TO SEE LOCKE WHEN HE’S YOUNG in a time when the DI was on the island, or not on the island yet, meaning the submarine belonged to DI, not the others. THAT confuses me, too, I hope they explain it!
I think Ben was just lying when he said that… mostly lying at least. We’ve already seen in season five that there is a place in Los Angeles where you can find out where and when you need to be to arrive on the island. Maybe Tom stopped by Lamp Post Station…

I’m gonna make a stab at this one – but please correct me if I’m wrong.. The Hatch/Swan Staion had nothing to do with communication in that sense, the reason they were cut off – was because of Greta and Bonnie down in the LookingGlass. When Mikhail asked them why they were jamming communications they simply said that Ben Told them too – and that they didn’t question his orders bacuase they trust him – and they trust Jacob… As Greta and Bonnie was on assaignement in “Canada” we also learned that it’s simply Ben wanting to have total control over the Island. Remember, that was Charlies sole mission – to shut off the jamming equipment.. Originally, the Looking Glass was used to guide the Submarines to and from the Island. However as we know, that is nowhere near the only way to reach the Island. Desmond came with boat, Michael and Walt elft in one(By following specific heading(325) provided by Ben) Also, Daniel seems to be able to calculate asafe route. More than that,(supposedly – the REAL)Henry Gale arrived in a balloon.. The reason Ben Told Locke they(as in everyone, Lostie’s and Other’s alike) wouldn’t be able to return(and why his own people believed him) is because they BELIEVED this was true. Apart from the Galaga(the Sub) the Other’s also had a small boat(the one they took Walt in – later given to Michael, right) Althogh small and unsuited for longer journeys at sea – I don’t think they ever used it for that. Remember – Ben Tells Michael that if he keeps to 325 he “will find rescue”(and this was prior to Ben’s claim about the magnetic anomaly, screwing things up) I believed there was someone wating for Michael and Walt to pick them up outside “the zone”(which might have been a secondary way of travel besides the Galaga) Besides, Michael and Walt both went underground, and Tom still had no problem finding him at all, because they kept him under watch. Now, with the small boat gone – the Other’s have to rely on the Galaga, and once Locke blows it up – no way off the Island.. not.. The Other’s later take the Elizabeth(Libby’s/Dessmond’s boat – that Ben later claimed to Sayind – brought him off the Island(which we know is a lie) and I believe that this is the way Tom was able to go back and forth(Recruiting Michael and getting back to get shot) Now, we know that between the jamming getting turned off and Tom’s death – the Other’s should still be under the impression that comunication is offline – however – Tom might have been in on it – working with Bonnie and Greta. The girls mission was simply put – to make sure that only people Ben wanted to come and go – were allowed to. Tom was one of them. And more than that – both Widmore and Penny eventually found the Island(Penny kind of, she found where it used to be. Once she spoke to Charlie(after he turned the jamming off) she knows where to look closer(eventually finding our Losties. Remember, she was looking for an Island, but found her Long Lost Love, how awesome is that awesome) I can’t say for Richard(He might have used the Black Rock back in the days for all I know) but given his response to John(back in 1954) about the Island’s access is priviliged information, I’m lead to believe that there is yet another way to travel.. And that’s all I have so far, Am I wrong, let me know..
