I’ve watched all of the episodes and i don’t quite understand how Hurley became Hugo or vice versa. Is there some significance to his nickname? Why would the writers just start calling Hurley, Hugo for no reason…. Any suggestions?

Hurley’s real name is Hugo Reyes. Hurley is a nickname. I seem to remember in an episode Hurley was talking about his nickname but never explained where it came from.
Yes. It was very funny the way he said it! Season one. He is talking about people’s secrets. About how the survivors of 815 do not really know about each other and their respective pasts. Then ‘en passant’ he mentions that his name is not really Hurley but Hugo but tries to sound mysterious about it.
