Dan the Man….and is he the unborn baby?!
I posted on another thread (which i can’t find) why i believed that Dan was alive and well as a 10-13 year old living on or off the island…….looks like I was wrong! That’s fine i can accept being wrong J BUT the more I think about it the more it does not make sense.
Lets look at some ‘facts’:
-
The actor that plays Dan (Jeremy Davies) is 39 years old (source: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001111/)
-
Daniel was a professor in 1996 when Desmond visited him at Oxford (Season 4 – The Constant) (If not a professor it is certainly a post Doctoral researcher)
-
Daniel was the youngest ever PhD from Oxford (Season 5 – The Variable)
-
The youngest ever person enrolled on a PhD at Oxford is 17 he started his undergraduates degree at 14 (source: http://www.groundreport.com/Arts_and_Culture/Child-Prodigy-To-Pursue-PhD-At-Oxford ). On doing more research (very quickly i might add) 14 seems to be about the youngest you could start at Oxford! Now that is still 4-5 years ahead of the curve!
-
The youngest professor ever is 19!!!! Yep 19! (source: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/735499/alia_sabur_youngest_university_professor.html ) and from South Korea!
So what is my point you cry?! Well if Dan is Eloise’s unborn child in 1977 he gets a PhD and becomes a professor by 19 (or close to it)! At Oxford! One of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world! In England, land of history and educational snobbery (I’m English!). I just don’t buy it!

brother_des, Great information!
I believe it is a case of ‘suspension of disbelief’. If Daniel is born in 1977, and the year is 2007, this would make him 30 years of age. I can’t recall where I read it, but it said, Daniel is 32, in present time.
I also read that Daniel was at Oxford at the age of 19, in 1996. He was considered to be as brilliant as his mother stated!
So, it is possible Ms. Hawking is pregnant with Daniel in 1977. Given the current circumstances of what is happening on ‘the island’, this might be the reason why she leaves ‘the island’, at first opportunity.
Not a perfect answer, but…….
Fair points 🙂 I guess any show with a FDW, time travel, a slave ship in the middle of a jungle and a crazed scot underground pushing a b few buttons every 108minutes does not have to be “logical”.
God I can’t wait for the end of Season 6!
You make some great points, brother_des! But, please be careful when referencing Desmond, as a crazy ‘scot’. lol
Desmond is quite beloved, and so are the ‘scots’, on the site.
I don’t want Lost to end! sniff….
Brother Des, I am so with you on this one. It has been the hardest thing for me to buy lately. And I can deal with a Smoke Monster, FDW, time traveling, resurrection, etc. But this..this an atrocity! 😉
But seriously….it really does bug me. I really do want it to be clarified. I just wrote on in the comments of one of my theories a way to ‘explain’ Charlotte’s age discrepancy, which isn’t necessary considering the writers acknowledged their goof. I just have a hard time buying that they would do it again and flaunt it in front of those of us who have math skills! lol
Good research BTW!
If Elloise isnt pregnant with Dan, why does he look at and motion toward her stomach and say
The writers have a terrible track record regarding the supposed ages of their characters vs the actors who play them.
Jorge Garcia does not look even remotely 46 years old! And yet…
🙂
LOL
She’s pregnant with Desmond. Penny’s doing her half-brother.
I just hate it when a “Clever Show” makes lots of mistakes, especially when there is time travel involved makes it even more confusing 🙂
As for Highbrows comment….think you just solved what JACOB is!?! The Love Child of a Half Brother and Sister (Des and Penny)….wait thats Little Charlie……If he grows a tail later in life its confirmed! his parents are related 🙂
What happens when half-siblings get together and have a kid after one of them has spent years on a magical island?
They have a hobbit.
Riddle solved!
To make this a simple answer based on what we know of Dan, Lostpedia has him listed as being born in 1977…I dont get why it wouldnt be Dan, more confusion is not necessary, especially with births at this point…
Its just the whole age thing that annoys me! because this makes charlotte now about 10 years older than him! as if!!
I dont think Charolette is the best example for an age comparison with anyone.
I agree!
And it would only be six years…remember, we are supposed to believe Dan is 30 years old, meaning when we see Dan in 1996 in “The constant”, lol, he would only be 19 years old when speaking with time traveling Desmond…
I bet the writers regret EVER putting anyones birth year in the show at this point…I know I do…
I bet the writers hate Lost Forums where people pick over what they probably saw as insignificant details. I notice that for the Flight 316 and O6 who returned they use phrases like “30 years earlier/later”.
And Widmore was looking for the island for 20 years when he was exiled no earlier than 1993…which would make the scenes topics of him looking occure in the year 2013.
In reality, before the wheel moves from Ben, he was only looking for 11 years, almost half of the previously stated.
I think that when you write something like this, its hard to put exact dates in that work, and from my perspective, they make far less mistakes than correct ones…
The show is very well done. I liked X-files and on re-watching that i was shocked at how many actors were cast in multiple roles! including Terry O’Quinn. Bit shabby but thats what happens when the flog something to death!!
