The Others
This is a questions i really want an anwwer to!
Why, in Season 1 and Season 2 and 3 did the Others dress like tramps when presenting them selves to the Losties?
The conclusion i came to was because they were hiding their real identities, as they dressed well back at the barracks. But then, looking at season 5, it seems that the Others of old, did dress like tramps anyway. So my question is this:
If they dressed like tramps/ natives whatever normally, had the chance under Bens regime to dress nicely, why go back to dressing like tramps just for the Losties?
Any theories are welcomed here but im desperate for resolution!
I just hope they are better than the explanationn we were given by the show for why the Others don’t leave any tracks behind them…someone brushed them away with a branch. (this was explained in the season 2 DVD front screen for those that don’t know!)

I think that the Others did not want the losties to realize that there was modern civilization on the island and that the island was known about by the outside world because then they would want to contact the outside world and leave the island. I think they were putting on an act to avoid the losties intruding upon their normal lives.
hi dharma-spy, we have never been told the real reason for this have we? so im sorry but i have no idea? these are the theories i propose?
could be possibly as you have said in your post – hiding thier real identities as they were often out and about in the jungle watching our losties.
maybe they didnt want our losties to no that they live in a little comunity and are civilised as our losties may have started to search for dharmaville and that would have messed up ben or jacobs plans or something? being dressed like tramps i supose they seem to be more of a treat to anyone? if i was in the jungle and i happened to run into a normal clothed person and someone who was dressed like the others. i would deffinately be more intimidated and scared of the tramp person than the normal clothed person?
could be that they didnt want to ruin thier best outfits as there arent any shoping centres on the island?haha.
could have been a request from jacob?
or it may have been something that the creators put in there to make us the viewers more intriugued into finding out who these people are and where they came from?
i think its probably the first one as they didnt want our losties to know who they were so they could seem more frightening to them? eko rocks

Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors. I agree with Eko Rocks and Lostlove, the Others are just putting forth an image of barbarity to those that come to the Island. I believe though that when they went back into the jungle to go to the Temple they dicided to wear clothing that was better suited for trekking about the jungle. Also the producers once made a comment about the Others being sort of like hermit crabs, they fight with and kill other groups and then take over what’s left.
Hi Dharma-Spy, I can’t recall the post or the poster, but somebody posted about ‘the others’ and why they dressed ‘down’ in earlier seasons when appearing before ‘the losties’.
There were some great answers, such have been given here.
To answer your question specifically, we need to recall that ‘the others’ were displaced from Otherville by Ben way back.
So, they have virtually been ‘living’ off of the land for 3 years when we see them again in Season 5. Logically speaking, their attire is a little worse for wear!
Those are my thoughts on it, anyhow. Hope that is helpful.
Hi everybody! Regarding the Others wearing rugged clothes during the first seasons was probably to deceive our Losties and scare them with their disguises, throwing a mysterious halo around them in order to be feared by them and not approached. Remember the very first meeting of the losties with the Others in the jungle. Mr Friendly was even wearing a fake beard and he told the losties “this is our island and if you are still here is because we let you but don’t cross this line don’t walk any further than the beach or else…”.
