My theory is that Jacob (the weaver in The Incident) is based on the biblical Jacob. Following this presumption, the man in black he was talking to on the beach could be a parallel of the biblical Esau (Jacob’s fraternal twin brother).

In the bible, Jacob and Esau battled for supremacy even from inside their mother’s womb. Of the two, Jacob was quieter, laid-back and, for lack of a more appropriate term, Zen-like. Esau was described as a man who preferred a more physical life ‘ a hunter. According to the story, Esau, being the firstborn was supposed to inherit his father’s wealth and lead his people. However, Jacob conned him into giving up his birthright and tricked their father into giving him the blessing, freezing Esau out. Jacob eventually took on the name Israel; his descendants (from his 12 children) became the Israelites.

Applied to my theory, the island Jacob is laid-back like his biblical namesake. He wove and trapped fish. The man in black seemed gruffer and more impatient over intruders like the biblical Esau. The loophole they were talking about at the beach and then again inside the foot could be about the supremacy over the island. Maybe supremacy should’ve been the mib’s but Jacob managed to snatch it from him and become the island’s master and commander of its natives. The loophole might mean that there was a way for mib to get power back from Jacob; everyone else is just a pawn in their cosmic battle.

  1. I like this. I think you are right on the Jacob/Esau thing. It’s interesting because the entire series seems to be built up of opposites. Light/Dark, Night/Day, Good/Bad, Science/Faith, Farmer/Hunter, Dead/Alive, Destiny/Free Will. I feel like this entire series is just supposed to make you question what you believe.
