Survivors cannot die off the Island?

I seem to remember a conversation between Michael and an Other in New York when the “Other” said that returnees from the Island cannot die off it — meaning to say, Michael who has returned stateside was trying to off himself but to no avail because he couldn’t die outside the Island (or within its proximal radius). Or did the conversation just mean that Michael could not die yet since he hasn’t paid for what he did on the Island?

If the former was true, it would’ve been easier to believe that Locke could not have died by Ben’s hands in LA since Locke too was a returnee. However, the twist in the end of season 5 shows that mib took on the appearance of Locke while Locke’s dead body remained in the carrying case.

  1. All that was implied was that he couldn’t die because the island wasn’t finished with him yet.
If this is true, then apparently the island is through with Locke.

  2. lovea, Tom aka Mr. Friendly tells Michael that he cannot die until ‘the island’ is finished with him. This persuades Michael to go on Ben’s mission via the Freighter.

This is the same reason why Jack doesn’t succeed at killing himself. A car accident on the bridge, defers his attention.

If this is true, and I believe it is, ‘the island’ was obviously finished with John Locke, (in the living sense), and why he was allowed to die at Ben’s hands.

That is not to say however, that Locke still has a purpose to serve on ‘the island’. And, I don’t mean as Fake Locke. While his dead body may currently lie on the beach, it is not to say, that it will remain as such.

  3. very nice lovea, i forgot all about that conversation. yes michael did try to take his own life didnt he? i have been thinking lately that locke could have possibly been mib the whole or almost the whole time hes been on the island? that may be the reason he could be killed as it wasnt really locke? if it was infact locke and not mib maybe off island you cant kill yourself? maybe theres a different rule, and you can die if somebody else does it for you like in lockes case? thanks for bringing this up, really interesting. eko rocks
