Course correction
I was thinking about how we all assume that Desmond saving Charlie a bunch of times leads to the universe course correcting itself and Charlie dying in the Looking Glass after he pushed the button. What if that is backwards? Desmond was sent his visions to stop Charlie from dying earlier than he was supposed to die. Desmond himself was the instrument of course correction? This ties into some other things I’ve been working on and wonder what people’s thoughts are on this.

could be. another thought is that desmond was always supposed to save charlie so he could die in the looking glass, even though eloise lead him to believe otherwise.
Hi Roland, this is one of those ‘hot topics’ that has been questioned and discussed on the site.
Desmond learns about how the Universe course corrects from Ms. Hawking. She shows Desmond the man in the red shoes dying accidentally and explains if Desmond saved him, the universe would self-correct and he would simply die by other means.
When Desmond has his first vision of Charlie drowning, he saves him. He does this, in hopes that he can overt Charlie’s fate. He continues to save Charlie from death, knowing that what Ms. Hawking tells him is true. Charlie will eventually die.
Desmond learns via his experiences, that he can actually manipulate and prolong the death of Charlie. Eventually, when someone is needed to go down to TLG, he decides this is how Charlie’s life should end.
Desmond gave Charlie a ‘heroes’ death that had meaning. Charlie was successful in his mission, and he was able to tell Desmond about ‘the freighter’ not being Penny’s boat.
Ultimately through his visions, Desmond is able to place purpose on the whole course correction concept.
The only question is, was Desmond supposed to find this meaning, or, was he guided to it, by a ‘higher source’ by way of his visions.
This is a very interesting theory. Do you think this is evidence of the universe course correcting or is it more of Jacobs puppet mastery?
I think Jacob and MIB may have been having a clash of wills thru Charlie.
I think the bigger question is is this an example of being able to change the future (in this cases Desmond altering the way Charlie was supposed to die) or the inevitability of the future? Or did Charlie choose his fate instead of letting Desmonde dictate it?
I don’t think Charlie or Desmond decided anything. They were puppets on strings.
